"So, what's the plan for tonight?" Arnold asked from the back of Kevin Price's minivan.
"Um, I thought we could go to the park." Kevin responded, letting go of his boyfriend Connor's hand to adjust the rearview mirror so that he could see Arnold and his fiance, Nabulungi, the girl that Elder Cunningham had fallen in love with on the three boy's mission too Uganda two years ago. Despite their rule-breaking tendencies, all four of them were still heavily religious. Mostly Kevin- his love for the Heavenly Father was boundless. In the rearview mirror, Nabulungi winked at Kevin- she and Arnold knew about the brunette's plans to propose to Connor McKinley that night.
In his distraction, Kevin had forgotten about his imminent responsibility- driving. There was only a split second in which he heard Connor screaming before he was thrown out of the car. When he managed to open his eyes, he was on the pavement. A group of people had gathered to see the van wrapped in a lethal embrace with a lamp post.
Nabulungi and Arnold were across the road, and Kevin ran to them, searching desperately for his beloved Connor. A lump grew in his throat when the redhead was nowhere to be found.
"Kevin!" Arnold called, pointing to the car. Connor was hanging limply out of the passenger's side. Kevin rushed over, a sinking feeling arising in his stomach when he saw the rather large piece of glass protruding from Connor's neck. He was gasping and crying, obviously on the brink of death. Kevin pulled him out of the car and onto the road, where he was in full panic mode- his boyfriend was bleeding to death in front of him and there was nothing he could do.
Connor only had a few moments left, and with his final breath he managed to croak out "Ke- Kev... Kevin." Before closing his eyes forever.
Nabulungi and Arnold came up beside Kevin, who was staring blankly at the dead boy on his lap.
"Kevin, I'm..." Arnold tried to say, but Kevin cut him off with one hand.
"Nabulungi, remind me what you used to say back in Uganda. The thing about fucking God?" He whispered.
Nabulungi was taken aback. "Y-you mean Hasa Diga Eebowai?"
Kevin leaned down, resting his head in the crook between Connor's neck and shoulder, his face instantly wetting with blood. All he wanted was that face that wasn't his face, the love that was most definitely his love all wrapped up into what it was- Connor. "Hasa Diga Eebowai." He whispered.
The couple behind him were shocked. Not only because their friend was dead, but because Kevin Price, the next All American Prophet, Mr. Perfect, Super- Mormon, had just cursed the name of God. Kevin rolled onto his back, pulling Connor's limp arm around his shoulders. He wast still warm.
"Hasa Diga Eebowai!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, and thats when the tears began. He repeated the phrase over and over again until the Cunninghams joined him, lying next to him on the pavement. For the next five minutes, three of them lied next to a dead body, screaming 'Hasa Diga Eebowai' until an ambulance and the police showed up. When that happened, Kevin stopped crying- maybe if he stopped crying, it would all go away. He watched them carry Connor away, but it didn't feel like it was him watching it in real time. It was silent and slow. If he could just turn it off...
Turn it off...
Turn It Off...
