The Birthday Wish

The Birthday Wish

I was one with the night as I flew towards a very familiar destination. I was flying towards Rachel's house and ultimately her bedroom window. I would often fly into Rachel's window to visit her but tonight was different. Rachel had told me earlier that she had a surprise planned for me tonight. I thought about what it could be but Rachel was so unpredictable that it was hard to figure out what it was. Rachel and I had a pretty strange relationship. I spent most of my time living as a bird that could become human for two hours at a time. Rachel on the other hand spent most of her time living as a human who could become a bird for two hours at a time. I love Rachel with all my heart and I knew that she felt the same way even if we hadn't kissed yet. We had been though so much together that it was impossible for us not to fall in love with each other. I think that I even love Rachel even before I met her. We were destined to fall in love and I couldn't imagine living without her. I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn't notice I was nearing Rachel's house until I almost passed it. I banked hard and went through her window and landed on her dresser. She wasn't on her bed as she usually was so I looked around the room for her. She was standing by a small table lighting candles on a small birthday cake. She was so absorbed in the task that she hadn't heard me come in. I took the time to study her and for the millionth time asked myself how I ever got so lucky.

Rachel?

She turned around at the sound of my voice and I felt my breath catch in my throat at the sight of her. She had traded the jeans and t-shirt that she wore to school for a miniskirt and knit top. Her long hair was loose and her eyes were bright with excitement.

"Tobias."

Rachel what is all this? I asked and pointed a wing towards the birthday cake sitting on the table.

"It's your birthday Tobias."

It is?

"Yeah."

How do you know that? I don't even remember when it is.

"I broke into the school office and checked the records."

They still had my file

"Yeah and I also found out some interesting things about the rest of our student body."

"You're so bad Rachel

"I know. That's the reason why you like me."

That's not the only reason Rachel

She blushed a very becoming shade of red and pointed to a pile of clothes on her bed.

"You can change into these in the closet."

I went to the closet and shut the door behind me. I quickly morphed to human and put on the clothes. I stepped out of the closet dressed in clothes that were probably brought at The Gap. She took my hand and led me to the table where the cake was. I relished the feel of her hand in mine and was sorry when she let it go.

"Make a wish Tobias and blow out the candles."

I bent over the cake and thought about what I could wish for. I thought for what seemed like an eternity but nothing came to mind. As long as I had Rachel in my life I had everything I needed. I blew out all the candles without making a wish and then Rachel kissed me on the cheek. I surprised her by kissing her back on her lips. It was a short, gentle kiss but filled with the promise of love and so much more.

"So did your wish come true?" Rachel asked me after we broke apart.

"Yes it did." I said and kissed her again.

The End
