Peter wasn't scared when he faced an army. No matter how large or intimidating; no matter what kinds of creatures it was made up of; no matter who was leading it. No, High King Peter never quailed at the site of an enemy: he stayed tall on his mount, sword drawn and ready in his hand, his armour polished to perfection.
He was confident as he guided his steed, the unicorn, back and forth in front of his troops, sure in his step when he moved to meet with the commander of the other army. No fear clouded his eyes or made his words falter when he spoke; he didn't turn to look over his shoulder as he walked back towards his own.
But he was not immune to fear; not even High Kings can escape the feeling. But it does not affect him during the battle, as one would expect; not even afterword, when every body he rolls over may belong to one who is dear to him.
Fear strikes Peter when he looks towards his own men. It is after he has conversed with the other leader and returned, after Edmund has taken his place at his brother's side and he has inquired as to the location of their sisters. It is just after he has paced up and down the length of his men; it is when he turns to them and meets their eyes.
He is humbled. He is reminded that he is not just a king but a boy as well, no matter how magnificent or high his name. He is the one who is leading these soldiers away from their families and lives; he is the one who is supposed to lead them back again.
And just when he thinks that he cannot move for this paralyzing feeling, that he cannot bear the burden that has been set on his shoulders, the words come to him.
He knows why he is here; he knows why each and every single one of them is here too.
And so he tuns back to face their common adversary, sits taller on his mount, points his sword towards the sky and fills his lungs with air.
'FOR NARNIA!'
And the echo of the cry at his back fills him with the courage he needs as he races toward battle.
Well, hope that came out as well as it sounded in my head. Reviews would be lovely!
