DISCLAIMER:I don't own Stargate or any of the characters and I'm not
getting paid for this, so please don't sue me.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: My muse is being stubborn. It won't let me write anything substantial for Amnesia at the moment, yet allows little fics like this to pop into my head all the time.
Anyway, please read this and review. This is very, very, very lightly based on spoilers for Chimera, but I only really used a name, so you wouldn't be hugely spoiled by reading this. I don't write anything with season 7 spoilers anyway since I avoid them like the plague and I've only just seen season 5 myself... Anyway, onto the fic, please read and review.

"And so the beautiful princess married the evil prince and they lived happily ever after. But the good prince pined away til the end of his days for his lost love."
"What are you doing?" An amused voice came from behind him. Jack looked away from the gurgling child in the cot in front of him, to see Sam standing in the doorway, a trace of a smile on her lips.
"Telling her fairytales." Jack gestured to the cot.
"That wasn't a fairytale." Sam laughed and moved into the room, towards the cot in the centre. "You've got it wrong. Surely the beautiful princess should marry the good prince?"
"Well, you see, there is a basic problem in all fairytales." Jack said. "The good guy always saves the day and gets the girl. Real life isn't like that and I was just trying to add a touch of realism to my story."
Sam laughed and bent down to lift her daughter from the cot, smiling at her. "Have you ever thought that they're meant to be like that? For the kids?"
"No. It just gives them false illusions." Jack commented, dryly.
Sam laughed again and lifted her daughter above her head, before commenting to her, "Isn't Uncle Jack silly?" She brought the baby down and settled her on her hip. "Thanks for babysitting."
"It's not a problem." Jack smiled at the little girl. "It's a pleasure."
"Will you stay for coffee?" She asked, gesturing towards the door. "Peter's making some."
Jack winced inwardly at the sound of her husband's name. "No thanks. I should just go."
A look of disappointment flashed across her face before she nodded. "Okay." She laid the baby back down into the cot before straightening, and ushering Jack out of the room, closing the door quietly. They moved silently towards the front door, which Jack opened, allowing a draft of cold air into the warm house. Sam shivered slightly in her evening dress as they stepped out onto the doorstep.
"Go back inside before you freeze." Jack urged. "I'll see you later."
"Thanks again for babysitting. And at such short notice, too." Sam smiled gratefully.
"As I said, it's not a problem." Jack replied. He wouldn't have been able to refuse her anyway. He'd been surprised to get the phone call, and he knew that he'd been their last hope. It's not as if they were as good friends as they had been anymore.
"Goodnight Jack." A stab of pain went through him at this. All those times he'd wanted her to call him Jack, and it had only ever been 'Sir'. And now when she does, it's too late anyway.
He smiled, not replying before turning and heading off down the path. He heard the door close behind him and sighed. The good guy never saved the day and got the girl. It was one or the other. He'd opted to save the world, and had missed out on the girl as a result. Turning slowly for one last look up at the house, he saw the silhouettes behind the kitchen window, Sam kissing her husband.
"And so the beautiful princess Sam married the evil prince Peter and they lived happily ever after. But the good prince Jack pined away til the end of his days for his lost love." Jack echoed, sadly. He shook his head and turned away, heading back to his own, empty home.
