Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of "Dark Angel", they belong to James Cameron and Charles Eglee.
A/N: Takes place a few years before my other story, "Confusion Never Stops."
"Wait, well... I don't ... this is... oh," he nervously took the package which was being given to him.
"Logan? Are you sweating?" Max asked through her small laughs when she saw his forehead get shiny. He looked into her eyes for reassurance.
"It's just that," his words were cut off when he glanced down at the baby who was stifling a cry.
"She's okay. Hold her closer... I think she likes that." Max said as she strained while she rose to sit straight up. On top of the sheets and blanket, sitting on her knees now, Max didn't look as though she had just given birth.
Logan did as he was told and pulled the baby a little closer to his chest. She rested peacefully, her head supported by his elbow, his free hand under her back.
"7 pounds 4 ounces. A whole 20 inches long." Max murmured with a smile as she looked at Logan.
"She's tiny, Max." He tore his eyes away from their 1 hour old baby girl long enough to grin at Max. The sheen on his forehead had disappeared and the color in his face had returned.
"So, her name..." Max said quietly.
"Yeah, we can't refer to her as the Baby for much longer, now can we?" Logan looked up with sparkling eyes and smiled.
"Right, eventually I doubt she would like that," Max nodded and gazed down at her daughter being held by what looked like the most doting father ever. "Actually Baby Cale is sort of catchy." She laughed.
Logan adjusted his hold on their daughter. During the movements her eyes slowly opened and tried to adjust to the light in the room. She squinted up at Logan who in return smiled lovingly down at his brand new baby.
Both parents seemed to be lost in their own thoughts. They had decided that the topic of choosing a name would be postponed until the baby had entered the broken world. They wanted to meet their child before deciding on something that maybe wouldn't fit the baby once he or she was born. Now that it was more than 1 hour since the baby girl had made her grand arrival with a wail heard 'round the hospital floor, it was time she was given a proper title.
Max scooted closer to the edge of the bed to get a better look at the baby who was blinking, and who looked quite comfortable all wrapped up, nice and warm. Logan noticed her admiration and slowly pulled the baby away from his chest, leaning towards Max with ease.
"Here," he whispered.
Max reached out and gently took the baby from his grasp on her. Logan sat back slowly and crossed his arms, as if satisfied.
"Abigail?" Logan questioned. Max shook her head.
"Isabella?" Max suggested as she looked down at the baby.
Logan frowned.
"Um...Emma?" His eyebrows rose, but Max grimaced.
A moment of silence was broken by Max's voice.
"What about Jaden?" She asked, while running her index along their daughter's cheek.
Logan pursed his lips together and began to nod.
"I love it, Max." He smiled and leaned forward, brushing his thumb along the baby's forehead and down the length of her small, perfect nose.
"Jaden ..." Max paused and looked up at Logan as she bit her bottom lip. She smiled widely. Logan had never thought she looked more beautiful than she was right then, at that moment, holding the result of their love.
Complete.
