Screams. Her screams are all I can think about. Every night I am haunted by them. I can't stand to hear her in so much pain. I'm too much of a coward to comfort her. So instead I just listen. Every night I hear her screams. Most nights it's Prim, she screams for her to run, but she's always too late. Some nights it's Finnick, she screams for him to hide, but he can't hear her. Occasionally it's me, I don't think she even knows I'm back yet. She screams for me, screams my name waiting for an answer I will never give. Haymitch comes over every day, he tries to convince me to talk to her. He goes over to her house too, I tried to get him to tell her I'm back. He says I need to do it myself. I'm too scared too, I won't even leave the house. She gets up though, she puts on a brave face and acts like everything is alright. Most people think she's healed, but they don't hear her screams. They don't know how broken she really is. Haymitch told me told me time is running out. Soon it will be too late to save her. He says I can fix her. He says he can make her hold on for a little while, but not forever. He says she needs me. Every night I am tempted to vist her, to try and help her screaming stop. Days, months, even years pass this way. I leave the house now. I try to put my life back together. Her screams are still there. I know I will never be whole again as long as she screams my name. Tonight her nightmare is about me, she cries for me, she screams an apology for not being able to save me. Tonight is the first time I've heard her apologize. Its not your fault. I think silently. Its my fault, for not going over there to help her. In the morning Haymitch vists me. "She needs you Peeta." I say nothing, I just stare at my cup of milk. "You can fix her, but if you wait much longer there will be nothing left to fix." He sighs and leaves. His words sink in slowly. I know he's right. Katniss still gets up and goes into town. She still acts as if there's nothing wrong, but her eyes are becoming hollowed, there becoming dull, and empty.
