I open my eyes, finally, as a field of grass starts to surround me. I have to stand on my metal plate for sixty seconds, before the gong sounds and we are free to run to the Cornucopia. Gold and shining, with useful weapons surrounding it, waiting to be chosen by a tribute. The other tributes all have their poker face on, showing no emotion. Deep inside, I know that they are scared. I am not scared, though. I have been training for this for years. At the reaping, I finally volunteered. Now, everybody thinks that I will be a Career, but I am not going to be. I am going to go off on my own, and go against the Careers.
The countdown gets closer to one, as I watch a girl eye a curved blade lying by the Cornucopia. I am looking at the same thing, so I look at the girl with my evil stare. She looks at me as if she is scared, so I think I have done it right.
My strategy is to run to the Cornucopia, grab that blade, and climb on top of the Cornucopia, so nobody can get me. Once most of the tributes have run off, or even better, died, I will grab a backpack and maybe some food. I still have no idea how I will survive in the arena, because this year, the arena is a labyrinth. There are 48 Tributes, and 26 entrances that I have counted.
The three other tributes from my district look at me with envy, probably figuring out a plan to kill me. I am already planning to kill them. I will probably sneak up on them in the night and go from there.
There are 12 Districts. Four from each District. 48 Tributes. Only one comes out. Then, the gong sounds and I know that the 76th Hunger Games have just begun.
