Notes-

Okay.

I got some good news, and bad news.

The good news is, that yes, this is the rewritten version of Shattered and Waking Up that you guys have been waiting for me to re-upload.

The bad news?

My computer deleted Shattered.

So while I have all of Waking Up saved, Shattered is completely gone. Luckily I remember most of Shattered by heart to rewrite it for this HD remake of the story.

To anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, I had started two separate stories some time ago that ran at the same time, but they connected to each other. Because I got tired of having them separate I just decided to take both stories down and make one big beautiful story. That's because when I first started each story I wasn't planning on combining them, but then I had a wonderful idea and had to go with it. This is going to be a higher-priority story, meaning it'll get more updates before my others do. I owe it to those of you that have waited for this to be done for a while.

With that said and done, expect both Sonknux, Sonadow, Son?, and a few other pairings in here. Lots of adventure, drama, and angst for you guys. It's going to be a bit different then the first time around, only slightly.

Anyone else hate how the Summaries only let you use 384 spaces? Summaries are usually short, but not that short. Might write an email to FF and complain. I had to rewrite this summary five times.

Shattered Awakening

Prologue

The blue hedgehog let out a curse as he jumped over the rocky wall, a wall that used to be a street, collapsing on the ground beside a red echidna. They were both panting, bruises covering their forms, and exhaustion beginning to take its toll on them.

"Have any bright ideas?" Knuckles coughed out, holding his side as pain blossomed throughout his ribcage. Sonic chuckled dryly, turning to look over the wall where the three Death Egg Robots were wreaking havoc without mercy.

"Well, two are down, three more to go. I can't get a hold of Amy and Tails can only fix the Tornado so fast…" the hedgehog frowns, watching another building explode from a hit. "If Rouge can't find the last emerald soon…" Knuckles watches his friend turn and slump back on the ground next to him. Sonic seemed to be thinking, and thinking hard for once. He held his head in one hand, his ears folding back. "Would there...be any way to use the six Chaos Emeralds we have to go Super Sonic? Is it possible?"

The Guardian of the Master Emerald stares with wide eyes at his friend. "I don't know...I don't think that's a good idea, Sonic…"

"What other choice do we have?" the hero exclaims, eyes narrowed. "If we don't do something, the whole city's going to be leveled. We can only keep them back for so long before they catch up to the others, and then what? All those people will be…" he cuts himself off, not wanting to think about the massacre that would result. Knuckles can see the fear in those emerald eyes, feeling it himself as he tried to come up with any other way they could do this…

"I...don't know...I don't want…" he swallows, the two's eyes locking as the heaviness weighed down on them like a pile of bricks. "I don't want something to happen to you…"

Sonic's mouth is a tight line, and the echidna could tell he was really thinking for any last-minute ideas, anything else that would be safer than this.

"Knuckles...I have to do this…" he says quietly, the both of them knowing that there really wasn't any other way. "Give me your Chaos Emerald…"

The echidna grits his teeth, wanting to fight the other against it. They've been fighting for hours, now, there was no way they could even go a couple more. Sonic was right, they could only hold off the army of robots for so long, until they found the evacuated people on the edge of the city and took them all out.

Reaching for the emerald in his dreadlocks, he shakily holds out the yellow gem, placing it in Sonic's open hand. He holds it there for a minute, eyes never leaving Sonic's. They shared a mutual moment with each other then, one that said without words that this could be the last time they interacted with each other.

"You better not die, you hear me?" Knuckles tried to sound light-hearted, but both heard the ominous meaning behind his words.

Sonic gave him a weak smile. "It's flattering how much you care about me, Knux."

The echidna felt his face redden as he pulls his hand away, turning to look away with a stubborn huff. "Don't get full of yourself. Just be careful, alright?"

He hears a chuckle, before he feels warm lips against the side of his muzzle.

Jumping, he turns to see Sonic giggling and jumping over the wall again, his eyes wide.

"You childish-!" he yells, before watching the blue blur explode into a golden ball of light, crackling with Chaos Energy. One, two, three, the robots exploding into a blinding white one after the other. The robot army beneath them began exploding like firecrackers, until the light was so blinding the echidna had to get up and run to a safer spot, his hands above his eyes to shield them.

When it was all said and done, the lights and explosions died down, he found Sonic's unconscious, but alive body laying in a pile of rubble, surrounded by six, dead Chaos Emeralds.

He gasped for air as he hit the ground. He felt so...weak. So tired. So lost.

Chaos...

That was it. That was the name. Chaos Energy. That was what he needed, but he couldn't remember how he got it, where he got it, how to get it. He lay there, on the orange, rocky ground, his breath coming out in rough gasps, lying on his stomach. It was hot here, wherever this was, and his mouth was so dry.

He needed this...Chaos Energy.

Black lids fluttered open, and ruby red eyes focused on the space in front of him. He stared at his arm, which was spread out next to him, and focused on his wrist. Some kind of...ring; it was that he needed to wear. A ring that stopped him from losing his energy. A ring that would help him. A ring that he didn't have.

He let out a huff of breath, closing his eyes and furrowing his brows in silent frustration. He wrapped up everything he knew at the moment. His name was Shadow, and he was on an abandoned planet, and the rings he wore to help inhibit his Chaos Energy, which was very important he knew, were gone.

With a deep draw of air, he opens his eyes and puts his arms underneath him, and slowly pushes himself to his feet. He staggers just slightly, before he shakes himself off and looks ahead. He squinted, trying to make out shapes in the distance, but ultimately gives. The sun was just so hot; enough to see the heat waves rising nauseously from the ground. With a groan of irritation, the black and red hedgehog begins trudging forward. He had the sense that he was being followed, but in this vast wasteland of nothing, there was no one to be seen.

He needed rest. Shade. Water. His black fur coat was drawing in the sun's heat relentlessly, uncaringly. He could feel his body radiating this heat, as if he could turn into a sun himself.

It somehow felt…familiar.

The golden hedgehog next to him let out a frustrated string of curses, grabbing at his ears as they all watched the plant girl transform into a large, cherry blossom tree that covered the massive, blue glowing sphere floating in space. They could hear the sound of someone crying over their wrist-communicators, while someone else tried to console them.

"It'll be okay," the sound of the plant girl's sweet voice overran all the noise as she spoke to them. She sounded happy. Content. "Fire the canon and stop Dark Oak. It'll be okay."

"Fire Super Sonic in the canon?" another voice called out, gruff and anxious. "Won't that kill him?"

"We'll do as she says," the golden hedgehog spoke out, his voice low and serious, something that seemed unnatural from someone like him. "We have to trust her. This is her wish."

"We don't have time to argue," another voice spoke up. "She can only hold Dark Oak for so long. Let's not let her sacrifice go to waste."

"But Cosmo…!" cried another voice.

The golden hedgehog huffs and turns around, dashing towards the large canon at the front of their ship, disappearing inside of it. He watches, feeling something bitter grow in his stomach.

It'll kill him if he goes alone…

He goes after him, surprising the golden hedgehog. They meet eyes, the other obviously questioning his motives, before one smiles at the other, and the other can't help but smile back…

A splitting pain shoots through his head and he lets out a strangled curse, collapsing again on his knees and holding his temples.

That was right…he was in a battle in space with someone, fighting someone called Dark Oak…

Shit, why couldn't he remember everything? His mind goes back to that golden hedgehog, and he puts the pieces together. Super Sonic… Sonic

Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog.

He stares at the ground, trying to remember anything else. He couldn't. His mind was fuzzy like TV static, only showing him bits and pieces of what he was trying so desperately to remember.

"You're pathetic."

He jumps at the sudden voice, looking up to see a midnight blue hedgehog standing in front of him. Wasn't that…?!

"Get up. You're the Ultimate Lifeform, act like it," the hedgehog said, glaring at him. This hedgehog… His quills were standing upright, his fur almost black, his eyes were a pure white, no irises or pupils there. He wore those red and white shoes that were definitely Sonic's…if he remembered correctly, but something told him this wasn't Sonic.

"Who…" he tries, but his throat is too dry and his voice too raspy to finish. The dark hedgehog looks at him distastefully.

"Like I have the time to tell you. Get up. Move it. You need to haul your ass back to Mobius before there's more trouble than there already is. Did you not hear me?" he exclaims, crouching down to flick the black and red hedgehog in the nose. "I said get up!"

Shadow grunts and pushes the other away, grabbing his sore nose and glaring at him with squinted red eyes. The hedgehog was glaring back at him with his white eyes, hands on his hips as he stands up straight.

"Can you at least," Shadow coughs, cursing his inability to speak properly, "tell me who the hell you are and what is going on? Where am I?"

The dark hedgehog huffs, turning to look away. He puts a hand over his eyes, not liking the sun that beat down on them. "I would tell you, if I was allowed to. Unfortunately I am by law unallowed to share information with you that you have to find out on your own. I'm not even supposed to be here, but I had to get away before…" He stops himself, before shaking his head and glaring at the hedgehog again. "I can't answer your questions. I'm only sticking with you until we get back to Mobius. All you need to know is that I am Dark, Sonic's main Super Form. I'm here to make sure you get to him. I can't do much else to help you."

Shadow blinks, taking this information in as he studied Dark with a frown. "My memories are faded. I don't even know where Mobius is, and I barely remember who Sonic is."

Dark sighs, pinching the skin between his eyes. "There's a base up ahead that use to belong to the people that lived here before. Start there."

With that, the dark entity disappears into the ground, taking the form of the black and red hedgehog's 'shadow.' The biohog frowns, not sure what to make of his new acquaintance. He didn't seem to have any other choice in the matter. With a huff, he forces himself to his feet and keeps walking.
