Chapter 1
The day started out so normally. Joan got up, dressed herself, ate breakfast, and went with her mother and Luke to school. On her way to the building the crossing guard called out to her...
"Joan!"
"Luke, I'll catch up to you."
"Why is a crossing guard calling out to you?"
"I don't know maybe I dropped something."
"Whatever, see you in AP"
"Joan, brace yourself today, you will be put to a real test."
"What is that supposed to mean? I mean, don't you have some sort of task for me to do, join the football team, or talk to the girl who never showers?"
"No, just go to school, and brace yourself."
Joan gave a look of question...then stopped herself. "I know; you work in mysterious ways." Joan thought that was odd, and usually God tells her to have a nice day or offered up some cheery ending to their morning conversations...She thought to herself that she needs to stop thinking so hard about things.
Joan saw Adam and Grace standing across the street from the school, they must have gotten breakfast from the bagel shop. She crossed to meet them. She was so happy Adam decided to end it with Iris...Four was definitely a crowd.
"Hey guys"
"Hey Jane"
"Hey Joan"
"So you guys do that paper for English yet?"
"Jane, that's not due for another week."
"Yeah Joan, don't be such an over achiever."
"Hey I didn't say I did the paper, I was just wondering if you did the paper."
"Well, we'd better get to class."
Joan, Adam, and Grace were among the few students around who were still outside, despite homeroom starting in 3 minutes. If they didn't get across the busy street fast, it would be detention for the three of them. Grace saw an opening before Joan and Adam realized, and she darted across the street.
"Hey Grace, thanks for the head's up."
"Sorry guys, I saw the opportunity and I had to take it. If I get one more detention for missing homeroom, my dad's going to freak! See you in class!"
Adam and Joan waved goodbye and waited for the next available opening. Looks like they'd be late together, but at least when they got detention, they wouldn't have to serve it alone. They had no idea how late they were going to be...An unmarked black van pulled up in front of them, the door slid open and two men pulled Adam and Joan inside.
