Ten fingers.
Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten. All there. All playing beautiful music, Daddy's music. Her fingers move up and down the piano and her eyes close and Daddy's music swirls round and round in her head and all around her until a sharp slam and loud cracks and piercing pain make the music stop. She tries to hang onto the keys, tries to play more, but her fingers don't work right anymore, can't play Daddy's music, and she is falling. "I told you not to play the music. It's the devil's music," a voice whispers into her ear. "Devil child. Evil child. Evil children are meant to suffer until all the evil goes away." She hears Daddy's music playing in her head until she isn't awake anymore.
Ten fingers.
Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten. All there. All wrapped up in bandages too thick to hit only one key at a time like they're supposed to. It doesn't matter anymore. The piano is gone, and Daddy's music is gone, too. Mommy smashed the piano and burned the music and made her watch with her hands out on her lap so she could see them, too. See what happens to the devil's children and the devil's music. She whispers to the Gods to save Daddy's music, but it burns anyway, and Mommy makes her suffer for praying. She prays in her bed when Mommy's not around, and the next morning, she finds a disc with Daddy's music on it. She hides it in her sneaker, and moves it from sneaker to sneaker.
Ten fingers.
Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten. All there. All holding a Pyramid ball and trying to score a goal. She scores and people cheer, but no one's really cheering for her. She has no friends, isn't allowed any friends. She goes to school and she plays Pyramid after school until Pyramid practice is over, and then she goes home to suffer. No one asks her if she wants to go get a soda or a slice of pizza. They tried for a little while, but she always had to say no, and they've stopped trying. She is a demon child, an evil child, her mom says, and she shouldn't corrupt other, holy children. She's lucky to even get to play Pyramid, even get to go to school. She suffers and cooks and suffers and goes to bed and prays to the Gods. Two weeks later, she hurts her knee, and Pyramid scholarships which once were hers, which would get her out of her mom's house, dissipate into thin air. She prays to the Gods while she's recovering. One week later, after days full of recovery and suffering, she runs away, making sure to take the right pair of sneakers.
Ten fingers.
Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten. All there. All wrapped around a stick in the middle of her legs. It's her first time in a real Viper and the first time she finds a new beautiful use for her fingers. Her mother took her fingers away from her for a long time, a very long time, but now she can use them again to do beautiful things. Her mother is far away, and she is in a Viper and she is free. Her fingers make the Viper swoop and dive and roll and pitch and yaw. When she is in the air, her fingers make flying a Viper beautiful. Everyone tells her so. She thanks the Gods when she's back in her bunk, prays when no one is around. She is tough, tough Starbuck. She drinks her mother away and drinks the guys away and she fraks who she wants when she wants because she can. Because her fingers can do things to them. She has friends because she can, because her fingers can smoke cigars and play cards with them. She doesn't get too close, just in case her mother was right. And at night, every night she can, she listens to Daddy's music.
