" What the hell, Tom?" I glared at him," Scope gun? Are you serious? You're gonna get us killed!"
" We're only in the forth round," He scoffed, rolling his eyes," We ain't gonna die until at least the ninth round."
" Watch out there's crawlers behind you!" I warned him.
" Too late. I'm down."
" Great now we're gonna die, I have stupid shot gun."
" Just knife the shit out of them and run," he egged me on.
" Cassie!" Mom yelled from the kitchen.
I grimaced at the sound of my mothers voice and shot off the head of yet another zombie.
" Are you still fighting with your mother?" Tom asked lowly, as she revived him.
" Not about camping anymore," I shook my head," I gave up on that dream."
" Then what-"
" I caught my mother sleeping with Shane," I said quietly.
" What?!" he asked completely shocked, as he danced around stabbing zombies. Thank god for instant-kill.
" Cassie! You're going to make your father late!" Mom shouted.
I growled under my breath, and paused our game," Are you gonna actually go home today? Or are you just gonna sleep in my bed and eat my food?"
Tom grinned," Ahh, the beauty of homeschool."
I grabbed my backpack, and flipped him off," If the zombies come I'm tripping you," Flinging my backpack over my shoulder," Later."
" Bye," He sang waving a hand as I closed the door.
I sighed at my door, preparing myself to face my mother.
" Cassie!" My mother shouted.
" I'm coming," I shouted exasperated, trudging down the hallway to the kitchen.
" I made you lunch," Mom smiled at me handing me a brown paper bag.
" Thanks," I said dully, sitting down next to my dad and munched down on a piece of bacon.
" So," Mom started off slowly, I tensed and force-fed myself my eggs," When can I expect you home, Rick?"
" 8: 30, maybe nine," he shrugged, drinking a glass of orange juice," Why?"
Mom exploded.
" You've been working late for three weeks straight Rick! I haven't seen you in days! Would it kill you to be home by six so we could have a nice family dinner for once?" She ranted grabbing our unfinished plates and throwing them in the sink, they shattered.
" Sometimes I wonder if you even care about us," she said darkly looking out the window.
Seeing the look of pain on my dad's face made me want to cry, or hurt something, but I remained stoic. Idly, in the darker recesses in my mind, I sneered back at my mother that I had often wondered the same about her, ever since I caught her canoodling with Shane.
Quietly, I made my retreat out of the house, thankful Shane hadn't tagged along to drop me off to school today. I sat in the back seat of the Patrol car, trying to wrap my head around my mother's blindness; Dad loved us to a fault, and somehow she just didn't see that.
I heard the front door slam and saw Dad stalking toward the car. I knew I couldn't tell him about Them, not now at least when Mom was being so heartless.
A/N: Tom and Cassie R playing Nazi Zombies, lol.
