Makayla tapped her foot repeatedly against the rough, navy blue carpet as she impatiently waited for her friend. She had sat through a boring lesson in History of The Byzantine Empire. She forgot most of what she learned already. Than in third period - English - they had a test, it was all about how to determine the mood and tone In a text, story, song, or poem. Now, she stood in her regular spot, waiting for her brunette friend to bounce up to her like she always did.
Makayla caught a veiw of Zoe's curly, brown ponytail in the crowd of students, and instantly moved to join her. Zoe was dressed in a light pink polo, tan shorts that went to her knees, and worn-out sneakers. Her hair was messy, but neater than Makayla's. Makayla, ignoring the annoying chattering of students, smiled at her friend. Zoe carried the tray of uneaten food from the school cafeteria, her juice bag crumbled up in the corner, and empty besides a few drops of apple juice. Makayla dodged bags and arms and shoulders, just to talk to her friend.
"You'll never believe what I found, Zoe." Makayla said, excitement laced in her voice. One of Zoe's dark brown eyebrow rose and her hazel eyes twinkled. When Makayla pulled the item from her pocket, the twinkle in her eyes faded.
"A necklace?" Zoe groaned. "That's it?"
"It's not just any necklace. It's magic." Makayla laughed. Leave it up to the short, red hair, freckled face, weirdo to joke about magic. She held up the necklace higher, and Zoe had to admit, the necklace was beautiful. The gem was a blood red and sparkled in the sunlight, the color clashed against the silver chain holding it up.
"So? Why are you showing me this?" Zoe moved the girl's normal spot. Right in front of the computer lab, leaning on the glass door. She set her tray on her lap and dug into her meal. A chicken sandwich, chocolate milk, and something that looked very similar to green beans.
"Duh." Makayla smiled, her usual 'I'm-up-to-no-good' smile. She reached into her shirt and pulled out a matching necklace. The two were absolutely the same. "One is for you."
