The rocks started collapsing, and the shinobi who had taken her flee from what they caused.
I glance at my teammates, notice their horrified looks. I look upward, but it's too late. The rock is about to crush me, and I can't do anything about it.
A second before I was gone, I feel a force at my side. I'm propelled from the path of the boulder, and roll on the ground. I hear a crash, and as the cloud of dust clears what I see fills me with dread.
My teammate lay beneath the bolder, the right side of his body crushed. I run towards him, hating myself with each step. As I fall next to him our third teammate comes, and she has tears falling from her eyes.
"Why?" I choke out, barely able to speak.
"Because…we're…friends." He answered, a small smile on half his face. "And…because I…forgot…you're present… I want you… to have my sharingan."
I shake my head, tears streaming down my face.
"Hurry. I…can't be saved. My…whole right side…is crushed." He turned to out teammate, the girl he has loved since our team was formed.
"With…your skills…give…my eye…to him." He then looked back to my face.
"This way…I can always…look out for you…I will see what you see…I'll always be…with you. It's…my…gift."
It's my fault. All my fault. The team is so much more important than the mission. Why did I have to be so stubborn, so stupid?
I face the cause of this, the cause of his death. My eyes are closed, and I hear them laughing. Laughing.
I open my eyes, and they gasp. I know what they see.
"He has the sharingan!"
"He's still no match for us."
I leave their empty bodies, and jump into the trees, my last teammate behind me.
"He loved you, you know." I said, slightly louder than a whisper.
"What?" She asked, seeming shocked by the truth.
"He wanted to come save you. I wanted to continue the mission. It should have been me back there."
I leaned against the tree, looking out at the setting sun, tears streaming from my eyes.
