For a while, Briar had been separated from Tris, Daja, and Sandry. Even at fourteen, these four shared a very special link. They were connected by magic, and could even mind-speak to each other. When they were fourteen, they had all been called upon to "save the world", as Briar had jokingly said. He had been needed in Hatar to help with a drought there. When he returned home two years later, Sandry had been living at the Duke's Citadel, and Daja and Tris were still away, working on their own projects. Because of how lonely he was at Winding Circle, Briar went to live with Sandry until the other two returned. Then they would all return to their home at Winding Circle. Now, Briar had been living at the Duke's Citadel for a year. Tris and Daja were due home within the next few weeks.
Briar sat out on his balcony, thinking about Tris and Daja. He wondered if they had changed. Would he recognize them? 'Even when I saw Sandry again after two years, she had changed.' He thought. 'She still acted the same way, but she looked so different. She had grown a few inches, and although she was still slim, her figure had filled out…' Briar shook himself. 'This was Sandry I'm thinking about. My friend. Just my friend.'

Sandry sat in her room working on a dress for Tris. When she and Daja arrived at the Citadel, there would be a small ball in honor of the four mages. Although they were not yet technically full mages, they would soon be. When they were all eighteen, a group of mages from Winding Circle would examine and test them to see if they were worthy of becoming mages. Although she was nervous, Sandry was pretty sure that they would all pass. She looked down at the dress in her hands. It was a stormy grey-blue, and Sandry had used her thread magic to make sure that it would fit Tris, no matter what size she was. Sandry thought of her chubby, redheaded friend, whom she hadn't seen for three and a half years. They all wrote to each other, of course, but Sandry couldn't wait until they could see each other again. Tris and Daja were still too far away to mind-speak, and Sandry missed them terribly. She was glad that she had Briar though. He was also one of her best friends. She put the finishing touches on Tris' dress, and laid it beside Daja's outfit for the ball. For Daja she had made a similar dress of red-orange, which not only looked nice on Daja, but was the color of her magic as well.
Sandry looked up at a clock and realized that she had been sitting in her room for nearly two hours. 'I wonder what Briar has been doing? Maybe I'll go check that he hasn't gotten into any trouble.'

Briar started as Sandry came out onto his balcony with him. "Why didn't you answer when I knocked?" asked Sandry. "Sorry. I didn't hear. I was thinking." 'About you.' He added to himself. He smiled. ~Did you want something?~ he asked, in mind-talk. ~Nothing in particular. I've finished Tris' and Daja's dresses. Your outfit too.~
They began to talk about the ball, when a young servant came running in. "Message from the Duke for Lady Sandrilene fa Toren," he said, using Sandry's full name. "Your friend Lady Trisana Chandler has been sighted. She will be here in about ten minutes." The servant bowed and left the room.
Sandry jumped up excitedly. ~Tris!!~ she called, searching for Tris in her mind. ~Tris?~ She turned to Briar with a puzzled expression on her face. "I can't sense Tris at all. And she won't answer me."
