Brendan couldn't remember what happened. One minute he was half way through a practice training battle with Steven, the next minute he had woken up in hospital with blurry vision, his eyes covered with patches and bandages.
He sat up, not knowing where the button was to call for help. He climbed out of bed and felt his way along the wall until he reached the door. He opened it and walked outside, only to quickly realise he had found the bathroom. He walked back out into the room, and felt his way to the door leading to the corridor.
"Brendan! What are you doing out of bed!" gasped May.
"May? What happened?"
"You were training with Steven and his pokémon's attack move... I don't really know what happened, but he said you fell to the ground and couldn't see."
Brendan groaned. "How long?"
"Since you've been here? Two days. How long they want to keep you here? Another few days. Maybe a week.
He nodded. "Okay."
"Go back to bed. I have come to visit you again."
"Thank you."
She wrapped her arm around his waist and helped him back to bed. "I was so worried" she said. "Oh, and I saw Steven today. He said he was so sorry. He took your place at the league until you're better."
"He did?" Brendan smiled. "He is a great guy."
May looked at him. "Oh, yeah... he is."
"I really like him" Brendan admitted. "I think I'm in love with him."
"You mean... you mean like boyfriend love?" May asked, sounding cautious.
"Yeah. I think I do."
She sighed, soundings disappointed. "I see."
"May?"
"I forgot, I have to go now. I am meant to meet my dad to go over some research."
"May, will you come back and visit me?"
"Yeah. Later."
He nodded. Thank you. I appreciate you visiting me. Say hi to Professor Birch for me."
"Yeah, I will. Bye Brendan."
"See you May."
He heard the door click close and he leaned back against the headboard. He felt bad for telling May about his feelings for Steven. It obviously hurt her, even though he couldn't see her face, he could feel it.
He lay down, attempting to fall back asleep.
...
The door opened after what felt like years later, the nurse asked him some questions and took his stats before leaving.
He sighed, feeling alone again. The door opened again.
"May? I knew you'd come back to see me. Sorry about what I told you. About how I love Steven. I thought you'd understand. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. I didn't know how you felt about me. I'm really sorry. I... I hope you got some of your research done."
The silence was awkward.
"Nurse?"
Still nothing.
Maybe the door had just clicked open.
Then he heard footsteps. He heard something being placed on the nightstand and next second a kids from slightly lips met his.
He couldn't believe it. Who was it? Was it May? It didn't feel like how he imagined May to feel.
The footsteps excited the room, the door closed, and he was plunged into quiet again.
...
"Brendan? Are you awake?" May asked softly.
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry about before."
"That's okay. Thanks for stopping by even if you didn't say anything."
"What? I meant for leaving this morning."
"Someone came by-"
"Well, looks like someone has brought you a get well present. You have some beautiful flowers, some chocolates and a card."
"Can you read it to me?" he asked, heart beating fast against his rib cage.
"Of course." She cleared her throat. "Dear Brendan, I apologize for what happened to you, and I do hope you recover fully soon. I feel guilt from what I did, it was a terrible accident. I hope you can find it on your heart to forgive me. Hope you get better soon. Warmest regards, Steven Stone." She placed the card on the nightstand. "Brendan-"
He smiled, touching his lips.
