"If it would have been me… I would have gone to the night shift."
Eric's words stunned her.
"That's sweet."
Sweet? She thought it was sweet that he would have gone to the night shift for her? Eric almost lost his cool and started to grin after she said it but he managed to rein it in just in time before getting back to work on the evidence.
Calleigh watched him work for a few moments before she moved on to what she was working on. It was only later that night that she really analyzed what he'd said.
There were quite a few differences between Eric Delko and Jake Berkeley.
She sipped a glass of iced tea and studied her toes for a moment as she pondered them.
Eric had never broken her heart for one thing.
Well… sure, she'd been a little disheartened at the fact that he woke up from his near death experience and thought it had been six months earlier. They had been getting a little closer right before that. But it made her realize that they shouldn't be anything more than friends. Well…
Calleigh sighed.
Jake … Jake had broken her heart right away at the academy. And she didn't want anything to do with it. He was dashing and a smooth talker and knew his way around a woman.
She scowled.
Around too many women if you asked her. She didn't know why she'd gotten back together with him other than he'd kissed her and all thoughts about how he'd treated her before fled her head.
She'd felt a direct sense of loss when her eyes met Eric's right before the elevator closed as she left with Jake. She had no idea why.
She didn't miss the sarcasm of his comment after her vacation… nice tan… And the way he deliberately commented that Jake had the same one.
So here she was now… stuck again between a glass wall and an elevator.
Between a guy who was truly a friend first and a guy who could care less about being a friend to her.
She finished her iced tea and set the glass aside on a coaster, reaching for her phone and dialing a familiar number. She raised an eyebrow when she got his voicemail, pushing a button to leave a message.
"Hey Jake. It's Calleigh. Listen… I think it's time we took a bit of a break." She paused, caught off guard by the way her heart lurched when she said it. "You know… until at least Stetler doesn't have any concerns about our relationship compromising the integrity of the lab." She bit her lip for a second. "Anyway. Don't worry about calling me back. I'll … well… I'll see you at work." She said softly before hanging up and setting her phone aside.
"If it was me… I'd move to the night shift." Eric's words played on a loop in her brain and she found herself looking forward to seeing him at work tomorrow.
