Harm's Apartment
North Of Union Station
"Mac, you were the one who said it wouldn't work. When I saw you last..." Harm stopped, his voice catching as he recalled that Mac and Webb were so engrossed in each other that they never even noticed him leave the room. "When I saw you last, you and Clay didn't even realise I had gone."
Mac stifled a pained sob as she raised her hand to her mouth, realising what she had done to Harm; making him believe that she had made her choice, had chosen Webb.
"We haven't seen each other since then, Mac. It's been six months..."
"That's not strictly true. I've seen you, Harm." Mac spoke softly, her eyes on his, but her body held stiff, emotionally bereft now.
"You have?"
"I was... at the hospital when you were there with Catherine Gale. I overheard you talking about flying... for the CIA."
"It's a job," Harm responded, his voice flat.
"I guess so..." Mac acknowledged, turning to the door and raising her hand to open it.
Harm spoke quickly - this was their last chance. "The last time you left my place, Mac, you asked me what I would do if you were really able to take me up on my offer to stay with me," Harm paused. "There is no reason for you to leave now, Mac. You have no plane to catch, no files to work on." Harm knew all this. Mac had already told him that she had taken leave from JAG.
Mac was still facing the door when Harm had finished speaking; not moving a muscle, not daring to breathe. Had he really given her another chance?
"Mac, I don't want you to go." His voice was just above a whisper. Slowly she turned around, to find Harm had moved closer to her.
"Okay, I'm still here."
"And...?" The hint of a smile on Harm's mouth was reflected in his eyes, along with some doubt still. Mac grabbed the chance and smiled back as she spoke.
"And I'm staying... for eternity."
The remnant of doubt disappeared from Harm's eyes as his head dipped slightly and Mac's tipped up to meet his gaze.
"I. Love. You. Sarah Mackenzie, I love you. We still have to talk about us, and we will..." Harm stopped as Mac put her hand up against his mouth.
"Later..." she murmured. "Talking is extremely overrated."
