Tom waited for Will to go upstairs. When they heard the trapdoor click the man with the pipe spoke.

"Mr. Oakley, nice to meet you. I'm Mr. Berk."

Tom nodded his respects.

"Now, I'm a psychiatrist, and I've never seen this boy as well. I reckon you've done a mighty fine job, Mr. Oakley."

"Thank ye," Tom replied.

"About the kidnapping, well I think Willi- Will right, you done rescue him!" the warden exclaimed.

"You are an old man," the lady from Sussex began questionably, "but William seems to be very comfortable with you. I'm concerned with your age. Do you think you can support yourself and William?"

Tom thought for a moment, as not to seem impetuous. Then he told her, "Yes. I'm sure of it."

"Your financial state?" the lady asked, sounding doubtful.

"I'm well off," Tom retorted, a bit more hastily than he wanted to.

"And does he have friends?" the lady inquired. "There doesn't seem to be a lot of children his age around here."

Tom eyes shone bright and he smiled wide.

"Oh! He's got lots of friends! He's got Ginny and Carrie, Zach and-"

He was cut short by everyone's laughter.

"Okay! I got it!" the lady retorted stifling a giggle. "I think you're just what Will needs," she added, becoming more relaxed. She looked over questioningly at all the men, besides Tom and they nodded.

"Mr. Oakley, would you like to adopt Will?"

Tom's eyes opened wide and he smiled as bright as the sun.

"I'd love to, I would. I don't know if I'd be able to give him up again."

Everyone in the room smiled and the room became brighter and airier. The atmosphere seemed to lighten.

"Good! That 'ent Willie Beech, he 'ent. He's Will Oakley," the warden complimented Tom. Tom blushed ever so slightly.

"Thank ye," He replied.

The lady turned back to business. "Here are the beginning papers. Expect more in the mail," she informed as she handed him a thick manila envelope.

"Mr. Oakley," she looked him right in the eye and paused, "thank you. You obviously mean a lot to Will," she grinned and as an afterthought added, "And definitely vice versa."

The room filled with laughter again. The psychiatrist clapped a hand on Tom's back.

"You'll be great, any fool could see that. I can see from the picture of before he's much stronger. You've done worlds of good for him and I know you will continue to do worlds of good for him now."

The policeman, who had kept quiet the who time smiled cheerfully.

"Mr. Oakley, good luck with Will and the future."

The group got up to leave and they shared their good-byes. Tom waited for them to leave and he got Will.
