A short one shot of when Grissom leaves CSI after 9 years, I own nothing enjoy.

None of them had expected it to come so suddenly, though looking back Catherine realised it wouldn't have been long in coming, Grissom had been there for as long as she could remember. She remembered her first day and meeting Grissom, the man just had an aura that screamed that he was a silent genius, the others she knew would agree, but even she had to agree it still shocked her when it came.

It was the same as any other night, Grissom came in, handed out the assignments and everyone made their own small comments,

"is that it?" Catherine added onto the end of her comment. Grissom removed his glasses a habit he had,

"No" he took a short pause

"I know this has been a tough year, for all of us… and I have been thinking, I mean more than usual, and I made a decision, I'm going to leave CSI" the silence that followed was broken only by the sounds of the other rooms behind them other CSI teams working, Catherine's eyes widened in shock, Nick's brow furrowed and it was as Grissom declared that Catherine would become the new supervisor that her face became one of sadness, Grissom finished explaining what would occur when he left, but the beeping of his pager ended it, as he finished with an 'Ok' then walked off down the hall to head for his own case.

It was pretty much the same thing, over the next few days after his announcement, word had gotten out, that he was leaving and everyone seemed to need to hear him say it for themselves, Brass's perusal was simple and to the point 'So I hear your moving on' it was a statement not a question and Grissom replied just as simply with a 'I am' 'that's too bad' was Brass's response, and with that the conversation moved on to what Grissom had gone to Brass for in the first place, Catherine had simply said that she had known before even Grissom himself had known, Greg told Grissom how the man had changed his life,

Hodges, didn't seem to be able to come up with anything but 'who is Watson without Sherlock Holmes?' Grissom's response was that Watson was a genius in is own right… it's the right time for me to go' Hodges seemed to reluctantly accept this, before taking his leave from Grissoms office, the doctor asked Grissom who he was going to share all of his old Jokes with, Nick had not had much to say other than to express his thanks to Grissom for all the man had done for him over the years. Nick didn't need to mention anything but the thing that stuck prominently in his mind was when Grissom had talked to him to calm him down back when he had been kidnapped and buried alive, Nick didn't need to be told that he would probably have died with out that.

As Grissom left one thought ran through his mind as he walked passed the different rooms seeing his soon to be former workmates talking, working or processing some evidence, or in the case of Catherine and Brass they where both sitting at the table discussing something, Catherine briefly looked up making contact with Grissom, she gave him a supple wink that he responded with a wide smile, before giving a small nod and walking back down the hall towards the exit….

The one thought running through his head was simple, something he had said a long time ago

'when I leave CSI there won't be any cake in the break room, I will just be gone'

And just like that he was.

Once the others got off shift it was strange to know that it was over,

"Well time to start a whole new era" Nick said, the others nodded in agreement as they sat in their regular restaurant and had some breakfast.

"Yeah, but it's just like he said it would be, no big party's, no cake and final goodbyes, he's just gone" Catherine said, the others nodded, all wondering the same thing 'what would it be like without him around… different was a certain fact'…
