Phil didn't want to go to sleep.
He had tried for hours to keep his eyes open, but energy drinks, coffee and pacing could only work for a short amount of time.
After being awake for almost three days, Phil's body couldn't take much more.
It was 1pm and Dan had only just ventured out of his room into the kitchen. He grabbed his favorite mug and proceed to take the kettle over to the tap to fill it.
"Phil!?" Phil had been sitting so silently at the table in the corner of the room that Dan hadn't seen him until he had turned around. " You alright?" Phil was looking decidedly paler that usual and his eyes were framed by dark circles as he stared into the middle distance. "Phil, man, do you want coffee you looked like you had no sleep at all."
"Hmmmm?" Phil suddenly snapped back into reality, and seemed to see Dan for the first time. "Wha?"
"I said do you want a coffee, you still look like you're asleep." But Phil had zoned out again, his eyes unfocused but loosely pointed in the direction of the door. Dan shrugged and left Phil at the table, to make them both some coffee. He pottered around the kitchen glancing over his shoulder at Phil; if he was completely honest with himself Dan was worried about his roommate, but didn't want to seem too overly protective. They were both grown men and Phil could look after himself...right?
Phil was resting his elbow on the tabletop and supporting his chin with his hand, still zoned out; his eyes were open, but Dan wasn't 100% sure that he was actually conscious. "Phil? Phil, coffee!" I placed the mugs on the table and slid one towards him. Then everything went into slow motion. Phil's eyes slammed shut, his elbow slid off the table top and his head dropped downwards. "Phil!?" Dan closed his eyes, waiting for the impact.
It never came.
Phil's eyes jerked open and his head yanked upwards. For once his reflexes doing their job. "Dan?" Dan glared at his room mate, his protective instincts towards his friend breaking forth. "Phil, what the hell? What are you doing? Go back to your room, and for goodness sake get some sleep! You look like you haven't slept in weeks!" Phil's eyes were downcast "No." he muttered, Dan put his hand over Phil's "Phil, please." This time Phil stood up "I SAID NO!" Then stopped, his head spinning from getting up too quickly, and leaned against the table for support. "Phil?" Dan instantly was at his side asking urgent questions, but they fell on deaf ears. Phil closed his eyes in an attempt to stop the sensation. "Dan..." He moaned, "Sit down, quickly!" He guided Phil back down to his chair and quickly poured him a glass of water. "Phil, drink this." Slowly and with shaking hands Phil raised the glass to his lips, he took the smallest of sips and slowly swallowed. Then he froze and his eyes slipped closed "Dan..." he gasped urgently "Dan please! Quickly" Phil hiccuped and wretched, emptying his stomach of all it's contents. The table, the floor and Phil were covered with the foul smelling bile. Fortunately Dan had been able to jump back in time, and had avoided the onslaught. "Phil!" Dan moaned, and looked around at the mess.
However behind him he didn't see Phil slump down in his seat. Eyes closed, skin pale.
