The tension in the car was almost palpable as Massie and Claire stared out of opposite windows, eyes narrowed and lips tight.

The silence continued for a few more minutes until suddenly Claire shouted, "Exxon!"

She sat up straight and looked over at Massie triumphantly. "That's got to count," she said, grinning.

Massie turned and glanced at the gas station sign as the car drove by it. "No, it doesn't. We decided that 'ex' wouldn't count for X, remember?"

"We're never going to find an actual X," said Claire, flopping back against her seat. "Why don't we just skip it?"

"It wouldn't be a real victory," Massie argued. "But if you want to give up…"

"Never," Claire replied. She sat up straight and turned back to the window. Massie did the same, and the quiet tension resumed.

Massie sighed as the car passed a billboard advertising hair extensions. After a moment of thought, she said, "'Ex' can count."

Claire grinned. "On to Y, then."
