Let's play

Coraline didn't like it at all when her parents had to go to Ashland, and, for the first time, she had to sleep by herself in their new house.

She went into her room early. She pushed a chair under the door and ensured that it was closed completely. She latched the window and drew the curtains. Then she peered inside her wardrobe, and pulled open the bottom drawer of her clothes drawer; she got down on her knees and looked under the bed.

She undressed; she put on her pyjamas.

She pulled back the heavy blankets and climbed into the bed. Not to read but to try and sleep – she wanted to sleep as quickly as she could. She reached out and turned off the lamp.

"That's good," said the other mother, as she emerged from the small mirror on the drawer next to Coraline's bed. "Now how about for a friendly game of cards?"
