A/N- Best enjoyed while listening to Wake Me Up When September Ends by Greenday. Total OOC. I know they aren't the ideal characters for this, but somehow it felt right. It's just supposed to be a one-shot, but tell me if you want me to continue.
Diclaimer- I do not own Twilight.
"No!" she yelled, pounding her fists against his chest. "You can't!" she cried, a broken sob.
He closed his eyes, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill, the heat burning him. He would not cry. Soldiers did not cry.
"I won't let you!" she gulped again, pulling him tight against her as her delicate frame trembled and shook under the weight of her tears. "You can't…leave me," she whispered into the stiff material of his uniform, breathing in the musty scent. She didn't think he noticed.
He remembered their first date. She wore a flowered sundress, white, and he saw her for the angel she was. She wore a light, sweet perfume, and blushed when he held her hand. She didn't think he noticed. He did.
He heard. He wrapped his arms around her. "I love you more than anything in the world," he whispered into her hair, holding her tight, knowing he might never get another chance to do this.
He remembered their first kiss, sweet and slow. Not heavy. Love wasn't about sleeping with someone; it was about brushing your teeth together in front of the mirror in the morning, and laughing when toothpaste splattered on the mirror.
She dug her nails into his back, her head bowed against his chest. "Promise me…" she said softly. "Promise me, that you'll come back."
He remembered when he'd gotten the letter in the mail, printed on stiff, creamy paper, with an official seal stamped at the bottom. They'd fought. Screamed at each other, like no one ever should. Like they never should've. And he'd held her, as the sobs shook her body. He was afraid she would fly apart, and he wouldn't be able to pick up the pieces. Couldn't bear to fit them together again, only to see that something was missing.
She pulled away from him, and looked him in the eye.
He saw everything in those two gleaming pools of blue.
Evanescent, and forever. Infinity, and nothing all there in those two broken eyes.
Betrayal. Hurt. All there in those two broken eyes.
But they would not have forever. Not to be together, not to share their love. Not for family; the family they were only just beginning.
He gathered her into his arms again.
He felt fresh tears prick his eyes again. She was wearing his T-shirt.
There was no make-up. Her face was red and blotchy, her eyes pink and swollen. Deep blue circles etched under her eyes, her blonde hair dull and lank, tangled and limp.
And through all of it, she was beautiful.
They would have an eternity together.
He pulled her to him, and pressed his lips to he forehead, lingering there, savoring the taste.
"I promise."
