She walked into the apartment and welcomed the blast of warm air. The ride home had taken almost twice as long as usual. The snow had started hours ago and had caused all sorts of delays. She had been at a murder scene at Central Park most of the afternoon and into the early evening and was exhausted and colder than she thought was humanly possible. Slowly, she pulled off her black leather gloves, and unwrapped the gray cashmere scarf from her neck, she placed them on the table in the hall and then hung the long red wool coat in the closet, kicking off her heels into the bottom of the closet just before closing the door. She placed her gun, keys and badge in the drawer of the table. She took in a deep breath and slowly let it out as she walked into the kitchen.
She took a wine glass from the cupboard and poured herself a glass of wine and took it with her as she made her way through the bedroom and into the bathroom. She removed her clothes and put her hair up into a loose bun, took a few sips of the wine and climbed into a steaming hot shower. She let the water pour over her as she just stood under the stream for what felt like hours. Letting the water warm her up and wash away all the stress of the day. Once she was out she put on a black camisole and a purple t-shirt, she slipped on a pair of close fitting black sweats, she pulled the bun out of her hair and let the loose curls cascade over her shoulders, she ran her fingers through it a few times then she picked up her wine and headed towards the study.
The only light in the room was from the glow of the fire in the fireplace. There was soft contemporary jazz music playing in the background. The city outside the large window was a blur behind the snow. She put the wine on the desk in front of her and walked over to the couch, standing behind it she bent down and wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him lightly on the cheek.
They stayed that way for a few moments and then he took her hand and pulled her around so she was in front of him, she smiled at him and sat on the couch with her back up against the arm of the couch and her legs stretched across his lap, he let go of her hand and took the small pink bundle from his chest and gently placed it in her open arms. She pulled her daughter up close to her and drank in her scent, a mix of baby shampoo and a hint of him, placing light kisses all over her tiny head, the baby moved slightly and sighed as she snuggled into her mother. Her father leaned forward, arms around both of them and kissed his daughter on the forehead and then moved to his wife and dropped light kisses across her head her cheeks and then her lips, she finally looked away from her daughter and smiled at her husband and gave in to his kisses, kissing him lightly at first, small quick pecks and then deeper, one hand securely on her daughter the other reaching up around his neck.
Coming up for air she mumbled something that vaguely sounded like "thank you" and moaned lightly as he broke away from the kiss, nuzzling her neck and softly into her ear he whispered, "Are you happy to be home, Detective?" She stopped kissing his neck long enough to whisper back to him "You've no idea!" She felt him shake with laughter as he held her tight to him, their daughter securely tucked between them.
