A little snippet of something that's been bouncing around my head for awhile and finally came out. I would like to turn it into a full story if given the time and motivation. Let me know what you think. :)

"You know I can't come with you." she said breaking the silence and turning her head to look at him. He didn't say anything back as he stared at the stars for a few more moments before closing his crimson eyes. She could sense his disappointment even though he tried to hide it. She'd learned to decipher the subtlest clues as to what was going on in his head. Being overly stoic was a major one. If he didn't care he would have replied, nor would he have brought up his departure the way he had earlier that day.

She turned her gaze back to the stars and pondered her next words. She longed to tell him that she wanted to go with him, to escape this place and her duty and finally be free. She also wanted to tell him to stay with her and leave that life in the past. She wanted to explain why she couldn't go and make him understand.

"But I will always look forward to the day you return to this mountain even in brevity and welcome it with open arms if it does indeed come."

She knew that asking him to stay or saying she wished she could come would only make him hurt more if anything and in the end chose to simply welcome him to visit someday. She watched the stars twinkle above them as they had many nights since they'd crossed paths. She played some of those nights over again in her head and smiled knowing that even if he never returned she would have those fond memories with her forever.
