~ Preface ~

In a miniscule community located upon the outskirts of Virginia existed a town inhabited by supernatural beings that had been traditionally accepted as folklore, but little did the mortals realize, such monstrosities truly existed, prevailing within a lagoon of murk, camouflaged by the necessities of every day life. Time seemed to be a fictional conception here, for we endured an existence of eternity, never proceeding forward; solidified in allotment with the grievous remembrance of cherished ones lost. The aggregation that dealt penalties to its citizens as necessary was critically corrupt, calcitrating the evidence of the transcendental occurrences that ensued here beneath an attenuate afghan, equipped to expel every verity that was recondite once it was dispersed from the inclement canvas. My own mother, sheriff to this tainted hamlet, had been cultivated to despise the mystical varmint that treaded upon this domain; barren of sanity. The enthusiasm that each of us had once been proverbial with was now astray, pulled from beneath the nadir of this populace while we were too oblivious to comprehend that we were relinquishing the last modicum of sagacity that we still possessed. My mother was appalled when she became knowledgeable of the barbarian that the chaste, languid juvenile girl whom she once considered to be her daughter had become. It took time and exertion on my behalf to once again acquire the confidence of my mother; the conviction that had otherwise vanished upon my transition.

With a fraudulent enforcement of the legislation and citizens who couldn't differentiate virtuous from evil, one would have inquired the rationale behind our inadequate capability to flee from this forsaken life, but the justification was lucid. We were cemented here, like a boot that had been embedded within the opacity of a quagmire of sludge. The utilization of my tangible strength did me no favors, for, when you absconded from such a despondent vivacity, the recollection of your past tormented you in a fashion that no man should have to abide by. I was enervated, but still, the stamina rooted within my unadulterated heart nourished me, fueling my solicitude to persevere, to withstand the luminous flare of another day. The enemies that inflicted havoc upon this one-pony town had astonishingly discovered themselves to be astray from their belligerent dispositions, annexing themselves to the coalition of decency; with one individual in particular surfacing in my mindset: Klaus. My endeavor to persuade him to leave me be had done little to ameliorate his incessant advances; but rather, had magnified them, a constituent that had confounded me, but it was swept to the flank of my cognizance in due time. Klaus was supercilious and merciless, engrossed in emblems that were beneficial to him, and in doing this, disregarding the integrity of any other personage. He was not a man of benevolence, but just the opposite; animosity. It was conspicuous to the mere perception of a mortal, and -that- was disclosing something.

Klaus was a translucent man, unmistakably calloused; and yet, sometime throughout the duration of my day, the introspection of his presence in Mystic Falls had crossed my mind. He was sickening, but I could not refrain from my unconscious ingenuity wandering in his direction from time to time, in spite of my loyalty to Tyler.
