Notes: This was an idea I had about what would they do after Mulder returned in Season 8, without all the melodrama that the show put in. It's very simplistic, so it's not very long. It's just something I pictured them doing.

The fire crackled quietly in the fireplace, the only noise heard in the silent apartment. It was also the only light they allowed to illuminate them as they laid on the couch. She watched the fire dance as she lazily caressed his thigh and he gently stroked her hair.
This was what they needed…a chance to reconnect and become familiar with each other again the best way they knew how. With silent touches, and soft sighs they became reacquainted in her darkened apartment.
"How do you feel," she asked.
"Tired," he replied.
"Me, too," she answered.
They were trying not to discuss the events of the last couple of days, so small questions and simple answers were the safest ways to communicate.
She turned slightly and grabbed the stem of the wine glass filled with sparkling cider. His hand fell from her hair and gently slid down and over her swollen belly. As she snuggled back into her place, she noticed his hand making lazy circles around her belly button. She sipped from the glass and stared at his hand's movements.
"I was so afraid that you would never get to see me like this." She turned to meet his gaze. "I was afraid you would never get to meet our child." He closed his eyes slowly, the weight of the situation settling in to his mind…missing for three months, dead for another three, and then suddenly resurrected to find her pregnant. There was a lot to take in in such a short amount of time, but he was willing to try…for her, for their future. He opened his eyes, a smile playing in them, and then kissed her softly. She relaxed back against him when they broke away. There was a lot still unsaid, but it would not be said tonight.
She leaned her head against his chest and listened to his heartbeat. She loved the sound of blood pumping through him, giving him life. He sighed heavily into her hair as he brought his other hand to join the other across her abdomen and squeezed her tightly to him.
"God I missed you," she breathed. "Being without you, searching for you, all this time…it's just felt like one long day that would never end."
He kissed her softly on her temple, reveling in the feel of her next to him. His words were so soft against her ear, it made her realize how much she had missed the intimacy with him.
"You can rest now, Scully," he said, "the long day is over."
For the rest of the night, there was silence between them…a silent promise to not allow another long day to pass without each other.
End
Notes: Yeah, I know it's cheesy and the promise was broken, but at the time I felt like they needed a quiet moment together, and also at the time none of us knew what CC had to come up with the account for David's absence.
Hey, it's nice to live with hope.
