"Do you honestly believe that I don't have a plan B?" Katherine's voice teased smugly. "And if that fails, a plan C then a plan D, and…you know how the alphabet works, don't you?"

Damon turned over in his sleep as Katherine's words echoed in his mind. He wished he could reach forward and strangle the sounds coming from her throat just so she would shut up. It was nights like this one that he wondered what ever attracted him to her in the first place. Shaking his head, he moved the covers off of him and decided that bourbon would be the ideal cure for his case of insomnia.

Tonight hadn't gone the way he'd planned. He'd killed Mason Lockwood which provoked Katherine and that caused Elena and Stefan to break up. All in all, he'd rather forget that tonight ever happened. He made his way down the stairs nimbly, like a panther moving in the shadows. The moonlight guided his steps as he made his way into the dim library when he heard the slightest sound creep into his eardrum.

He couldn't place the sound. After all it had been so quiet that he'd almost missed it, but it was accompanied by the eerie feeling that he was being watched and he didn't like that one bit. Turning over his shoulder, he scanned the room with cautious eyes. The embers from the fire had almost all died, so the room was much darker than normal, but that would not prove a problem for a vampire. Nothing seemed out of place which temporarily put his mind at ease, however that was shattered when he heard the sound again, but it was slightly louder this time. The vampire's shoulder's tensed and his fists clenched by his sides, already growing frustrated that a sound as quiet as this one was putting him on edge, but then he saw it.

A movement in the shadows in the direction of the foyer caught him and he followed it. He sped there, hoping to beat it, but when he reached the foyer he was met with silence. Trees shook outside, their branches casting shapes along the carpet through the glass window on the front door. Damon surveyed his surroundings again and came to the conclusion that his mind had been playing tricks on him.

Walking back to the library, he passed under the main entryway when the hairs on his neck were suddenly standing on end. A low growl made him halt his steps and he slowly turned his body to see what really was going bump in the night. His gaze found a dark figure perched on the upper landing. It wore all black, including a black hood which covered its face from being easily identified. Damon assumed a fighting stance, his fangs emerging from his teeth at the sight of the figure. He wondered if one of Mason's wolf buddies had come to get revenge, but this intruder didn't carry the same scent that the wolf did. Regardless, he'd gladly take care of any unwanted guests in his home.

As if the figure could hear Damon's innermost thoughts, it leapt from the balcony and flew towards him. Damon met the shadowed figure, crashing his body into it and immediately tackling it to the floor. They wrestled ruthlessly, clawing at one another as they both struggled to gain the upper hand. Damon's hands tried to grip the hood of his attacker, but it moved much too quickly for him. He managed to get himself on top for a moment, however the figure swept Damon's legs from underneath him. The intruder sat atop Damon's hips and pinned his wrists to the carpet in one swift movement. It leaned down, flashing its sharp fangs in a gloating fashion that it had won. Damon snarled, snapping his teeth and struggling to get free.

"Hello Damon." The figure spoke and the vampire stopped his wriggling, immediately recognizing who had entered his home. The grip on his wrists was loosened and the face that was so close to his was removed. Dainty hands gripped the edges of the hood and slipped it off, exposing dark brown curls and a pair of equally dark eyes. The woman's pink lips twisted into a triumphant smile and she crossed her arms over her chest while Damon remained silent and dumbfounded. Handfuls of unanswered questions hung in his brain, but there was one thing he was most definitely sure of.

His best friend was back in town.

"Miss me?"
