"All of this because I didn't get you a desk?" Mulder asks.
"Not everything is about you, Mulder. This is my life."
"Yes, but it's..."
"But it's what, Mulder?" He doesn't answer her. Instead his gaze falls on a pencil lying on his desk.
"It's just that I wish you'd be careful, I've already lost you once and I don't want to lose you again."
"Mulder, I'm not going anywhere. I just want to have a life other than work."
"You are my life, Scully," he whispers with his head in his hands. Scully looks at him stunned. "The only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing that I'm going to see you. The only reason I keep on living is because one day I hope that you'll see that I love you more than anything and that I just want you to be happy." Scully doesn't know what to do. She chooses to leave the office and head home.
Mulder watches her leave, wishing she would have stayed and repeated his words. Sadly, Mulder exits the office and decides to take a walk. He finds himself sitting on a bench in Cincinnati Park watching the fountain lights change colors. Mulder stays there until closing time.
He arrives home around midnight. The door hangs partially open, but Mulder doesn't seem to care. He just plops down on his couch still dressed in his work clothes and his top coat.
"Mulder?" Scully asks softly as she enters his apartment. She sees him sprawled out on his couch and goes to sit beside him. "I shouldn't have run out on you like that. I..I got scared when you said those things."
"Why?" Scully lets out a sigh before she answers.
"Because...I've never had anyone tell me that before. I've never been told how much I mean to someone. And..."
"And what?" he asks as he lifts his eyes to hers.
"And I was afraid of my own feelings."
"What are you saying, Scully?"
"I'm saying that I love you too." Mulder gently brings his hand to touch her cheek. He kisses her softly as he brings his other hand up to cup her face.
