In the Face of Death

I couldn't see it in her smile

It was so bright and loving.

I couldn't see it in her eyes,

that sparkled with youth.

I couldn't see it anywhere.

She spoke, laughed, joked.

Just like everyone else

She spoke about tomorrow

But I saw it as the optimistic side of her.

But now,

As I hold her fragile body close

I could see

I could see it all

I saw it in her dull eyes

And her lifeless smile

I saw it so clearly.

She had always lived,

In the face of death.
