A few people asked, and so I've been struggling with writing part 2 of All In Good Time. So this is little thing is just me trying to deal with writer's block. It's a song ficlet based on the song All I Need Is You by The Click Five.
We don't need to go too far
Let's hold on to where we are
If it's real, we'll make it through
'Cause all I need is you
Hold On To Where We Are
Skye has officially dubbed herself Fitzsimmons' number one fan (or shipper, as she puts it). She seems to always have a plan to get the two scientists together, at least one a week, really. It's come to the point where Fitzsimmons can smell a set-up of hers a mile away. They barely even react to it now, there's no point in scolding her for her shenanigans since she's not going to stop.
Skye just doesn't understand. There's clearly something there, they're Fitzsimmons for godssake, the very definition of two parts of a whole. And it's been a while since they've openly denied it, that they don't see each other as more than friends.
She's asked Fitz before why he hasn't made a move. Clearly, Simmons would reciprocate, she'd said. The engineer would just shake his head at her. But that's not the point, he'd say. He doesn't bother explaining what, then, the point is. Hardly anyone really understands.
It's not like this is the first time he's been asked that question either. Their friends back at the Academy, their family, they've all asked, all wondered why he and Simmons seem to keep wasting their time going around in circles, avoiding the inevitable. Of course, back at the Academy things were different, still very much platonic. Slowly, though, they've changed. He knows it. She knows it. He knows she knows it.
And to them, that's really all that matters.
They know something's there, something's changed, but they're still figuring out what that means. Making a move would be both the easiest and hardest thing to do. They've got years of friendship hanging in the balance here, and to put them at risk for these completely new feelings? It would be foolish. A bond like theirs requires no room for mistake. Because he knows, once they cross that line, it's all or nothing for them, just like it's always been.
He knows that once he has Jemma, whether they work or not, there's never going to be anyone else.
So they leave things as they are. They choose not to rush. They let things progress naturally, gradually, the way things have always developed between them.
And they're content. They're perfectly happy to have their little smiles, the lingering looks, the seemingly casual conversations that mean so much more. They don't talk about it because they don't have to, not because they don't want to. They don't feel the need to be called a couple just yet. They're already partners, and they've shared more together than most couples ever will. Labels don't matter as long as they have each other.
He'll make his move when they're ready. But for now, things are good just as they are.
If you liked it, remember to favorite, and most importantly, review! :)
