The night before he left on a mission she never slept well. Every time she closed her eyes visions would flash before her. The look he gave her each time he stepped through the 'gate. Repeatedly imagining the day when the rest of his team returned, without him, haunted her. It was easier to keep her eyes open and focused on the man that lay beside her, the man she loved so much it hurt. She etched every detail of him into her memory, afraid that if she blinked, he would suddenly disappear. He turned onto his side in his sleep and reached out for her. He wrapped one arm around her shoulders and pulled her to him, she rested her head under his chin, as his other arm slid over her waist to grasp her hip possessively. She sighed softly and nestled into him, wrapping her arms around the arm that lay across her. Contented in the fact that for the moment they were safe in each other's arms.
The night after he returned he never slept well. Closing his eyes would bring back the horrors he had seen. He would see families swept up by darts, orphans scattering, trying to escape the culling. And he'd see the look in her eyes as he stepped through the 'gate. Terror. Despair. So the night he came home, as they lay in bed, he cradled her in his arms, and she slept soundly knowing he was safe and home. He watched her, memorising her face and the peaceful look upon it. He held her, as she curled up beside him, her knees curled up, him spooning her. Her head tucked under his, and he felt her body close, making sure she was real. Sleep was a long way off for him, but for now, having the woman he loved in his arms was the next best thing.
