Magnetism
Later, when he thinks about what happened – how that fence was magnetized and how it drew him, and then Allison, in – he will blame Jo. He knows it was all retribution, a stupid kind of revenge, because he didn't say "over" on the communications system. So she let him get stuck to that fucking fence and it's all because of Jo, really; now Allison knows (for certain) that he's attracted her. Hell, that he likes her. That was one of the most embarrassing moments of his life.
Magnetism. That's what you call it, isn't it, when opposites attract. He and Allison, they're opposites. She's one of those Global Dynamics geniuses. Granted, she's liaison with the Department of Defense but she is still, almost certainly, one of the brightest people Jack Carter knows. And since he's come to Eureka, he's met a lot.
They almost kissed, out there by the fence. He knows that he wanted to kiss her, and if he were honest with himself he would know that he still does want to kiss Allison. But right now, he's thinking a little bit about Callister and he's rethinking everything he knows about Stark. Jack knows that if – and it's a big "if" – that if something ever happens with Allison, Stark will most definitely kill him. He's not stupid. He realizes that Nathan still loves Allison, and maybe she still loves him right back. Maybe this thing – whatever it is between him and Allison – is just the fling before the big reconciliation with her husband.
He hates Stark just a little bit for having Allison in a way that he can't. Jack knows that it's a stupid reason, and that it's not like him at all, but it's just how he feels right now. Especially after almost kissing Allison, and especially after almost creating a morning thing – coffee for two. It's dumb, and he hasn't dated a woman since his divorce, but Allison is beautiful and interested.
That line about magnetism… It's a good one. Jack thinks that when he asks Allison out, he'll use that line. He thinks that she'll like it. He makes up his mind, in nearly a split second, to ask her out the next time that they see each other. There's sure to be a problem in Eureka soon enough; there always is.
