Vegeta was wandering West city late at night.

He was bored, and had been for a while.

Ever since the tournament of power, things had been very, very quiet.

Too quiet.

Vegeta had at first fell into the lull of everyday life. He watched his young daughter grow and had a bigger hand in her childhood than he'd had with Trunks by a longshot. Bulma was thankful for the help.

Kakarot was the same as always. Often disappearing from home and reappearing a month later to the anger of his banshee of a wife.

He liked peace to an extent. It got boring after a while.

And here he was, walking. He would have trained in the GR but he was going to do that tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day.

The silence of the 2am city was welcomed by his thoughts. The only light was the street lamps over head as he wandered aimlessly into an alleyway where no street lamps shone, but Vegeta's superior senses, to most of those who resided the planet, were more than enough to guide him.

He could feel three power-levels approaching him, slightly higher than the human average but not by much. He moved to walk around them but they blocked his path.

"Just what are you doing here, old man?" Came a slimy sort-of voice, "this is our turf," he heard the sound of glass being broken and felt something sharp being held to his neck.

Vegeta was only able to focus on that comment about his age. He bristled in annoyance and swatted the man into a wall, ignoring the others shock as he continued on his way.

He came out into an open road lined with buildings, and walked in the centre due to the lack of cars to stop him.

Suddenly, he twitched and spun to look behind him.

He could have sworn he heard something that he couldn't feel. Wait. There it was again. A low sniffling sound. He realised it came from above.

Looking up into the darkness, he could make out a figure on the roof of a nearby building.

"Just someone crying," he grumbled under his breath.

Not a threat, although it never hurt to be on guard.

He felt out the person's energy, and wow was it weak; weaker than the average human, no wonder he didn't notice it before.

'Must be a child' Vegeta concluded.

He was about to continue his walking and thinking when the power level moved towards him. He looked up again. The child had climbed over the railing and was walking towards the edge of the building.

Vegeta sniffed, 'The idiot best be careful,' he thought, and stayed where he was despite his better judgement.

The figure was peering over the edge, leaning further over than was probably safe, their hands still on the railing. Vegeta could hear the hiccups get louder, and concluded they were a boy from the tone.

Vegeta leant back against a nearby wall and closed his eyes, only just realising that at some point during his walk, he'd become tired enough to sleep. He took off gently, and was about to head home when he felt the power-level drop.

Not drop as in 'get weaker,' drop is in literally fall in space.

He acted without thinking.

He swooped under the boy and grabbed him just before he hit the ground, stopping solidly with a slap on the concrete.

They were frozen for a second, both looking like deer caught in the headlights, but Vegeta's mind was always active. He took this time to study the boy in his arms: he was clearly older than his size indicated, like Trunks, he couldn't be older than twelve. Tears streaked the part of his face that could be seen through a dark mop of curly locks, he was covered in red marks. The boy swallowed, and the spell broke.

"What in the world were you thinking!? If I hadn't come along you would be flat on the sidewalk, you stupid child!" Vegeta bellowed.

The boy made a weird noise, something like a squeak that got caught in his throat, and clamped his eyes shut.

This made Vegeta pissed, "Don't ignore me, boy! I just saved your life!" The boy was plonked down rather hashly, Vegeta could see his knees almost buckle from the force. He looked up at Vegeta, terrified and shaking, his eyes like saucers, while Vegeta glared at him. "Well!?" Vegeta demanded.

"I'm sorry!" He squeaked and bowed his head, Vegeta had to strain to hear him.

"Damn right you are! Ruining my walk! What were you even doing!?"

He heard the boy's breath hitch, then watched him shake his head, still looking at the floor.

Vegeta growled, "fine then, don't tell me. Go home you brat!"

The boy nodded quickly and took off in a jog towards the building. Vegeta grinned at the boy's terror, but frowned as he passed the building he had been on entirely, heading down the alleyway he had come from.

Vegeta shrugged it off, it wasn't his problem that the kid wasn't home. Then he heard a scream and remembered who he had met down there.

He slapped his hand to his face, dragged it down, then grudgingly went after the boy.

He could feel the man he back-handed into a wall lift the boy by the front of his shirt. Vegeta rounded the corner.

"Put him down," Vegeta said, with no real bite. Just like that, they dropped him and ran off. The boy landed heavily on his backside with an "oof." Vegeta grinned in the darkness, he still had it.

"T-thank you, sir," he heard that same small voice say, although a little bit louder this time.

"Get up." The boy stumbled to his feet as quickly as he could, struggling to see.

Vegeta sighed. He couldn't have this boy run into anything else, he was clearly a klutz and then all his hard work saving him would be wasted, Vegeta told himself. He would just have to take the kid home himself so that he could go home and sleep afterwards.

"Where do you live?" Vegeta asked, but it sounded as though he'd rather not know.

Vegeta couldn't quite see the boy's expression, but he was pretty sure it was one of disbelief. "Boku street."

"Where's that?"

"The-the other side of town."

Vegeta sighed loudly. "Come on then, I'll walk you home."

"Thank you-thank you so much. It's so scary out here when it's dark and I almost got attacked or worse-" the boy was rambling hysterically so Vegeta tuned most of it out. "-I'm so sorry to bother you, you're probably very busy, Mr...?"

"Vegeta," he answered gruffly.

"Mr. Vegeta."

"No. Just Vegeta."

"Oh. Thank you, Vegeta."

Vegeta grunted.

The boy had stopped shaking after Vegeta had steered him out of the alleyway. They began walking in a direction away from Capsual Corp and Vegeta hoped this wouldn't take long. They were silence for a while, which was welcomed by them both, until the boy decide he should make conversation.

"So, erm, what were you doing out here so late at night?" He rung his hands nervously.

"I could ask you the same question."

That shut the boy up, thankfully.

They walked in silence again until Vegeta decided that this was taking too long and it was too quiet so why not. He cursed himself for going soft.

"I was taking a walk."

"A midnight walk, huh?"

"Yes."

"That's cool. I would do those but like I said before, scary. I also like my sleep."

"Then what the hell are you doing out here?" Vegeta asked, exasperated.

The boy went quiet, then took a breath.

"I was at a sleepover."

"A sleepover, huh?"

"Yeah."

Vegeta realised something; "it was in the building you were on the top of wasn't it?" Vegeta asked angrily.

"Yes," the boy whispered facing down, clearly noticing the mood change and not liking it.

"Then why didn't you stay there!? Or go back there!? It would have saved me a lot of trouble!" He shouted.

"You told me to go home," he mumbled into his hands.

"You know what I meant! Stupid child!"

"I never should have gone in the first place and I didn't want to go back," the tears were starting up again. "They were always mean to me at school. I thought they were trying to make it up to me. But they just pushed me around and beat me up so I ran."

"You're a fool!" Vegeta announced.

"I know!"

"You never blindly trust your enemy. That's how you meet your downfall!"

"I-I know that now!" He threw back through sobs. The boy wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and stopped in front of a gate.

"This is it," he said in a shaky voice, "t-thanks for saving me from those guys."

Vegeta grunts, "and the roof."

The boy didn't make a sound, he just stared at the floor.

"No..." He finally said, "I don't thank you for that one."

He opened the door and slammed it, leaving Vegeta with his realisation, in the dark.
