I drew the blanket tighter around myself as I turned yet another corridor. Brooklyn House seemed to go on forever.
Where in the gods name is Carter's room? I thought in irritation, turning again. It was the middle of the night, the hallways were dark, and knowing my faulty sense of direction, I'd wandered off into an abandoned section of Brooklyn House on accident. All nomes had abandoned sections, and punishments were harsh if you were found trespassing in one. I'd been wandering around nearly an hour and I still couldn't find-
"Zia?"
I looked up. Sadie was standing at the end of the hallways, holding a small flame in her palm. The fire licked at her fingers but didn't seem to be hurting her. the fire made her look eerily ghost-like.
It's strange to be relieved when you find someone on fire.
"I got lost," I admitted meekly.
She shrugged, "okay. Going to Carter's?"
I nodded hesitantly. Sadie pointed to the corridor to my left. I looked and saw a familiar pattern on the wallpaper. I'd been so close and still lost. one more turn and i would have been there!
"Thank you," I said in relief.
She nodded and turned.
"Wait!"
She raised an eyebrow at me. "What? Do you need someone to hold your hand and knock on his door for you?"
My face flushed. "No. I was wondering why you're up at midnight."
"I don't sleep till two, but if you must know….I'm headed to Walt's," she admitted.
I swallowed my surprise. Of course I knew they were dating, it was impossible not to know, but I didn't think they slept together-
Hypocritical much, my dear? Ra said sleepily.
Go back to bed.
Sadie disappeared into the dark of the house before i could say anthing more. I let her go, wondering what she was going to do once she got there. I shook my head and decided I probably didn't want to know.
Knock, knock.
I sighed, tapping my foot. Maybe he was asleep? He did seem like the type to turn in early-
A sleepy groan almost made me jump out of my skin. I looked up and realized Carter had opened the door and was leaning on the frame, half asleep.
"Oh, Carter, I'm sorry I woke you up-"
"'s fine," he mumbled, rubbing his eyes. "What'd you want?"
I wrapped my arms around his waist and buried my nose in his chest. He smelled good, like he'd been outside."I got lonely," I admitted.
The next thing I knew my feet were not connected to the ground. Carter had thrown me over his shoulder and closed the door with his foot, carrying me to his bed.
"Carter!" I laughed, squirming uselessly. He threw me down on the bed and crawled next to me, pinning me to his side.
"Do you want me to let you go?" Carter asked sleepily. I shook my head and pulled him down so that his head was on my chest. His eyes closed and he nodded off, nuzzling me. I smiled. Sometimes Carter was as fearsome as a Puppy. I pet his hair absently, twirling the curls between my fingers. He was obviously exhausted. Teaching magic classes took a lot of his energy, even with his stamina, it was no wonder he was so sleepy.
Funny enough, even with him snoring on my chest, completely passed out, I felt much better.
"Goodnight Carter," I sighed, letting myself drift off.
