The Long Walk
Hello, everyone. This is my very first "Revolutionary Girl Utena" story. I first discovered the anime by watching the movie on an Asian-American TV network. I then watched the English language anime on YouTube. I'll admit that I found the movie ending more satisfying than the anime, but it is the anime ending that inspired this very short story. I hope you enjoy it, despite its shortness. I clearly don't own "Revolutionary Girl Utena."
I can't say how long I walked each day, but I know that I walked for a long time. My heels smarted about 100 feet from Ohtori Academy, and yet I continued on. Perhaps I should have worn a pair of shoes other than white patent Mary Janes. Chu-Chu, my marmoset, rode on my shoulder. He enjoyed the snacks that I packed for the journey, but we both ate sparingly. I had no idea where I was going, but I knew that if I kept walking, I would find her. I would walk forever if I had to. Fortunately, though, it wasn't necessary.
Chu-chu and I walked for five days until we reached a small town several kilometers from Ohtori. I asked if anyone had seen a young woman with pink hair and blue eyes and finally, a kind old woman pointed me toward a hospital. My heart began to race. I ran into the hospital and asked after my love. The woman at the front desk had no knowledge of the name I gave her, but when I described my love, she brightened.
"Yes, she's in room 204. She's had no visitors in all this time. I'm sure she'll be glad to have a friend here…"
And so I went to an elevator, so unlike the gondola we last rode to the arena to face… Akio… Dios… the Prince… My tormentor… My brother… My… lover… I cannot remove that from my history. But then she came. I learned what real love was… She did not regard me as a prize to be won or traded. She said I was a friend and I could tell that I meant more to her than that. And then I betrayed her, literally stabbing her through the back. But even after that, she still fought to save me. I rode up to the second floor, remembering this all too well. I stepped out onto the floor, smelling disinfectant.
The corridor was painted white and the floor was covered in some sort of blue-gray tile. I easily found Room 204 in this white yet depressing place. The door was closed. Should I just walk away?
And then I remembered… I lifted my hand and knocked. "Who is it?" called that wonderfully familiar voice.
I took a deep yet unsteady breath before I answered. "Anthy Himemiya… May I come in?"
"Anthy?!" she asked in surprise. "Is it really you?" Her voice shook with emotion, but I couldn't tell if she was horrified or thrilled. "Please… please come in if it's really you, Anthy…"
I turned the handle and opened the door. It was a nondescript hospital room with just a single bed, white nightstands and a chair for a visitor to sit upon. It was non-descript, except for one thing. A young woman with pink hair and blue eyes, heavily bandaged, was sitting in the bed, a puzzled frown on her face. "Anthy? Is it really you?" she asked again. She looked very good for someone who was stabbed with thousands of swords. Her face was still as I remembered it. It was noble and beautiful at the same time. She might be a woman, but she was still my true prince.
I came forward and sat down in the chair so she could see me well. "Hello, Miss Utena," I said, my green eyes filling with tears.
"Anthy!" she exclaimed, sitting up to pull me into a hug. I had found her at last. My Utena… I don't know what will happen now with us, but here in this room, even though she is injured, all that matters is that we are together.
THE END
