"Natsu, don't let this be our final song."
I keep replaying Lucy's last words to me in my head. I will never forget them as long as I live, which, as fate would have it, is a long time. Someone up above must have heard her and had a sick sense of humor. Maybe they just didn't want me to be alone, but they could have taken me with her instead of the sick joke that actually happened…
It took a while for me to fall in love with her. With me being an immature, teenage hothead, it was definitely not love at first sight, especially since she was weird, loud, bossy, sometimes mean, and obsessed with money. Don't get me wrong, she had her good points too, but I didn't realize them at first. I tried to keep my distance at the very beginning of our friendship, but something kept dragging me back towards her. I know now it was her light. She had a horrible childhood but was always full of light and overzealous about life. We quickly became inseparable, and she slowly became the most important person to me. I would do anything for her and protect her with my life. (Sadly, when it mattered most, I couldn't live up to the promises I made myself.) Having her in my life made everything worthwhile. It's crazy how one moment can change everything.
It all started many, countless years ago. I lived in a home for misfits called Fairy Tail in the city of Magnolia. A place made for orphans and runaways where we could learn job skills, have a place to call home, and never be alone. We couldn't have done it without Mr. Makarov, who ran the place. He liked helping out lost souls and thought of us as his children. My dad disappeared when I was little, and as hard as I tried, I couldn't find him anywhere. Mr. Makarov found me roaming around alone, and brought me to Fariy Tail. I became friends with Gray and Erza, even though Gray was more my enemy and Erza terrified me. They taught me about life and useful skills like reading and writing. (I still shiver at that memory with Erza teaching me though. It was horrible!) After a little bit, this girl named Lisanna attached herself to me. She always hung around me and was kind of annoying, but it was nice to be apart of a family. However, one night she was brutally murdered. Her body was never even recovered because the guy who attacked her ran away with it after her sister, Mirajane, tried to stop him. He tore open her neck, and there was tons of blood left behind. It was devastating to everyone in our home. We couldn't believe something that horrible happened to one of our own. We tried searching for the slaughterer, but no trace of him could be found. We all tried to move on, and eventually the heart-wrenching pain turned into a dull ache.
A couple years later, I stumbled upon a girl while on a job in Hargeon. She seemed lost and alone, so I took her home to Fairy Tail with me. She was so excited because that's where she wanted to go but couldn't find it. Lucy ended up fitting right in with the rest of us and made our bonds of family much stronger. She helped heal the gap left by Lisanna's death a little bit more. They were alike in many ways, but different. Like I said earlier, I didn't realize how important she would turn out to be to me. She was the light that I so desperately needed in a bleak world of darkness. And that's where my tragic tale begins…
A/N: Thank you for reading until the end! Let me know what you think! I don't have an update schedule because I work and go to school full time, but I'll try to update as much as I can!
