To Good to Be True

Ever have one of those days when everything seems to go your way? Blair Sandburg was having one of those days and he was suspicious. He knew something was going to happen and it was driving him crazy waiting. After all, everyone knew he was a trouble magnet. Things never went this well. Take this morning for instance. He had woken up on time, his car started without a hitch and his classes had all gone smoothly. Weird.

He knew something was going to happen. After all, it was only a matter of time. But what? He was between girlfriends at the time so that was out... Jim's cases had been pretty mild as of late and as far as he knew
there were no escaped convicts.... What did that leave? It was driving him nuts.

"Something wrong, Chief?" Jim asked curious as to why the observer was being so quiet.
"No...and that's what's wrong," Blair stated starting to pace the loft.
"Run that by me again?"
"I had a terrific day--so something must be up!"
Jim laughed. "Aren't you being just a little bit paranoid?"
Blair looked at him as if had had suddenly sprung an extra head. "Jim, this is ME we're talking about here."
"Well, maybe your just long over due for a good day."
"Jim, this isn't just a 'good day'...it's bazaar! Take this afternoon for instance. I was walking down the street and I noticed my wallet was missing..."
"How is that good?"
"You didn't let me finish. See, then this beautiful women comes up to me and hands me it saying she saw me drop it...and then she gave me her number!" He ended shaking his head completely mystified.
"Your kidding?"
"Wait--it gets better."
"It gets better?" Jim asked in surprise.
"Then, my car started without even a sputter, and before that I had found ten dollars on the street and look, I got home without so much as a papercut!"
Now, Jim was worried.
"Your right, something must be up....that all sounds too good to be true!"
"And I just wish something would happen already...," he trailed off as the loft door broke open. In came a thug welding a gun.
"I knew it!" Blair crowed with a sigh of relief.
The thug looked at him as if he were nuts and Jim finally recovered from his surprise in order to pull out his gun.
"Freeze, Cascade PD!"

Epilogue

"So, he got the address from the women who 'returned' Blair's wallet..."
"But, how did they get my wallet in the first place?" Blair asked trying to put together the pieces.
"When you bent down to pick up the ten dollars earlier." Jim explained.
Simon shook his head disbelievingly. "Only you, Sandburg..."

After Jim had drawn his gun the thug--who had turned out to be the brother of a man the two had recently put away--had grabbed Blair. This followed by a chase, a standoff, and finally an arrest...which happened after the thug had tripped over Jim's dropped gun--knocking himself out.
Blair sporting a sling on his arm gave Jim an I-told-you-so look.
"I guess it really was to good to be true," Jim mused.
