Chapter 1-Bad Nights Lead to Worse Days

The smell of sweat battered her as she awoke. It just wouldn't leave her mind. Her face in the mirror. Every person she saw as she stared absent-mindedly out the window. Every voice on the other end of the line as she chatted shallowly on the cell phone. Every face in the diner window as she sat at a red light that seemed to last for an eternity and a day.

All of them—were his. No matter where she was or what she was doing, he always seemed to be there. Was it paranoia? Or was it hatred vile as the rancid taste in her mouth after every time she dared to speak his name to herself—or others, for that matter? Or was it—could it even—be—love? She didn't know, and really didn't care—she just wished it would evanesce and never return. Forever.

"Another bad night?" Davis suggested, a note of pity in his voice, as Tru walked with broad strides into the City Morgue. The answer to his query was quite conspicuous to Davis and was therefore a pointless waist of perfect oxygen.

"You have know idea..." Tru retorted irritably. An awkward silence followed, as all conversations seem to reach at one point or another.

"We had a body come in a few minutes ago, Tru." Something in his voice caused a feeling of uneasiness to hover over her, and it could be apparent to anyone but an irritated female haunted by Death that Davis was foreshadowing a horrible occurrence. Something had gone wrong. Dead wrong.

"Ugh, already? Well, I guess we ought to go check it out," she said as Davis began leading the way toward the examination room, not noticing the presage from him. She fell into step behind him as he headed toward the room.

On a table in the middle of the room was a white sheet covering what looked like a lump, but was actually the body. Tru trotted past Davis to the table that held the body, but Davis stopped her before she could pull away the snowy white sheet that was dappled with a crimson sunset.

"Tru..." he began to warn, "...there's something you should know."

She ignored his forewarning once more, and peeled away the bloodstained sheet that was once bleached a brilliant white. Tears welled in her eyes as she gasped, gazing down at the injured body of someone she knew. Very well, as a matter of fact.

"Harrison," was all she could manage to utter in a soft, teary voice before breaking down to tears.

Author's Note: Something not Teen Titans at last! Maybe not a kidfic, but I'll be writing for you kids who aren't interested in this kind of fic. Hope you enjoyed this, as I have been meaning to put this out since August 9th. Go figure! Please review! Also, feel free to read any of my other fics. The one titled "I'll be your Hero" really doesn't name characters, but you can tell who it is if you watch Teen Titans. If not, then oh well just enjoy!
