Nina Dobrev meets a 13 year old girl named Becca, and discovers her mother died of cancer, and her father left her at an orphanage so he could run off with his new wife. She decides to adopt the girl, but knows she'll need a better father figure, so she asks Ian, who is still a good friend of hers after the breakup, to be the girl's adopted father.
I do not own Nina Dobrev or Ian Somerhalder, but I do own all original characters.
Nina POV
The bright lights of the paparazzi swarmed me as I left my apartment. This was one of the things I hated about being an actress. I had no privacy.
"Nina! Is it true that you're trying to win back Ian from Nikki?"
"Nina! Do you regret giving up Ian?"
"Nina! Are you and Ian Somerhalder having an affair?"
Of course I regretted turning Ian down when he proposed, but I wasn't the one to end our relationship. I told him I wanted to wait, and he told me it was over. Sure, we're friends now, but it wasn't easy when I was still in love with him.
"Nina! Are you and Chris Wood dating?"
I groaned. Since Ian and I split, the public have been making up rumors about me dating all these different guys. I've made a lot of friends since the breakup, but that's all they are. Chris and I hit it off when he joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries as Kai. He's become one of my best friends.
I unlock my car and jump in, shutting the door and driving off. I had work today, where I'd have to deal with Ian and Nikki being gaga over each other. It made me want to throw up every time I saw them together.
After parking my car, I walked onto the set and snuck up behind Chris, jumping on him from behind, covering his eyes. "Guess who?" I laughed.
"Hmmm. Is it… Morgan Freeman?" He asked sarcastically, causing me to slide off his back and fall to the floor, laughing.
"How did you know?" I tried to say in a voice like Morgan Freeman's. Soon Chris picked me up and set me on my feet. "Sup Ninja?" He asked while hugging me.
"Hey Chrissy. How you doing?" I asked in my impression of Joey Tribiani from Friends. He laughed at me and we walked across set to where Candice, Kat, Matt and Zach were chatting.
"I'm doing exactly how you look, Dobrev." I laughed.
"And how is that, Wood?"
"Damn fine!" He exclaimed, making me and the group we had just joined snicker.
"Why thank you." We were joined by Jodi, Penelope and Paul within a few minutes.
We broke off into smaller groups of conversation and Candice and I made plans to go to lunch when we had a break.
"We have to go to that new café, Neens. It's supposed to be to die for!" I grinned.
"Of course, Candi!"
Three hours later, Candice and I wound up at that café, and we were having an awesome time. We'd just paid for our meal when we were swarmed by the paps. We both groaned and ran to the nearest building, which just so happened to be an orphanage.
The girls watched the children surround them, but Nina stopped on a young teenager in the corner of the room. She had blonde hair and blue eyes with a golden rim around her pupils. She had a journal in front of her and was scribbling furiously in it, when she was suddenly pulled up by an older boy with brown hair and light grey eyes. He smirked at her before ripping her journal from her hands.
I was about to interfere when the girl stomped on his foot, punched him in the gut, and grabbed the notebook. I couldn't help but laugh. This girl had fire. Candice and I exchanged a glance before heading over to her.
"Hey. We couldn't help but notice how you stood up to that jerk over there. Nice job. What's your name?" She looked up at us in shock. She quickly looked back to her journal and then up again, her eyes widening even more.
"You're Nina Dobrev and Candice Accola. Why would you be talking to me?" She didn't ask rudely, but straight forward. It made me laugh.
"I think you look like a great person. Now answer the question. What's your name?" She laughed in response. It was bitter.
"I don't know why you'd care, but I'm Becca.' My eyes widened. Why wouldn't I care?
I voiced my thought to her, and she simply shrugged. "No one pays attention to me here. They don't want the 13 year old whose mom died and left her with a dick of a dad who ran off with his new wife as soon as he could." I gasped. My heart broke for this girl who had clearly been jaded by the hand she'd been dealt in life.
With her fire, I could see myself in her. She was smart and brave. I decided immediately that she deserved better than an orphanage.
"What would you say if I told you I could get you out of this orphanage and give you a proper home?" Candice looked at me in shock. It was only a year ago that I had told Ian that I wasn't ready for a family, and now I wanted to adopt this girl. But I knew I couldn't leave here without her.
She smiled hesitantly. "Are you serious?" I grinned.
"Yes. I like you. You deserve better than this. I may not be able to be a mother to you, but I can be an older sister or an aunt." She brightened up as I spoke.
"You really are like Elena in real life." She blushed as she realized what she'd said and I laughed.
"Thanks." Now let's go get some forms so I can adopt you."
Becca nodded and I went up to the receptionist, got a form, and took Becca and Candice out of the orphanage.
Thankfully, the paps had left, so we got back to the set, where I brought Becca to my dressing room before going to tell Julie I needed the rest of the day off.
"Hey Julie, you got a sec?" I asked. She nodded and I ushered her towards my dressing room. She gasped when she saw the newest member of my family. "Julie, this is Becca. I'm adopting her. And because of that, I need the rest of the day off."
"Hey." She smiled at Becca before turning to me. "You can have the rest of today and tomorrow off. I won't question you on your decision, but where did you find her?"
I explained everything that had happened since the paparazzi ambushed Candi and I and she nodded, grinning when she'd heard what Becca had done to the older guy. "She's got fire." I laughed and nodded.
When I finally got Becca and I home, I brought her to one of the bedrooms. "We'll get this room personalized tomorrow. We'll also go get you some new clothes. We'll need to get you a tutor, because I don't want you away from me yet. You're 13, but I don't want anyone to hurt you." She simply nodded and I grinned at her before leaving her on her own for a bit. "I'll be back. I just need to call someone.
I called Ian. When I'd looked over the forms to adopt Becca, I saw that she needed to have a father figure too, so I thought of who would be the best father figure to my daughter. I only hoped he'd agree.
When he showed up, I called Becca downstairs. I'd cooked spaghetti for the three of us. She came downstairs in her blue skinny jeans and purple tank top, smiling. "Hey Nina." She greeted before taking her seat, not noticing how Ian followed her with his eyes until she looked up from what she was doing, which was setting the table. She nearly dropped the plates she was holding. Luckily Ian was standing beside her and steadied her hands before she could.
"You're Ian Somerhalder…" She trailed off, her gaze darkening slightly in anger at him. I couldn't help but laugh, silently wondering why she hated him.
His eyes widened comically at her hate-filled gaze before he held out his hand to her. "Well you know who I am, and I presume you're Becca." She looked at his outstretched hand before setting the plates down and shaking it, pulling away as quickly as she could, fire burning in her eyes. She looked over at me.
"Please don't tell me he's who you're going to ask to sign on as my other parent." She frowned.
"Why not Ian? He'd be a good father-figure, if he agrees, of course."
"He hurt you. Don't think I don't know all about that. I used to admire him so much, but after what he did to you? It'll take a lot of convincing to make me like him again."
I laughed. "You are by far the greatest person I have ever met." She hated Ian because of what he did to me.
Suddenly Ian interrupted us. "Wait, what? Parent? Father-figure? What is going on Nina?"
"I'm adopting Becca, and she's going to need a good father-figure, seeing as she's only ever had a crappy one. I wanted to ask you to sign for her other guardian."
He let out a breath. "I would, but she doesn't really like me." He pointed to Becca, who was still glaring at him.
"Prove to her that you're a good guy then. Come on, Ian. Please? You're one of the only guys I'd trust to do this. I mean, I guess I can always ask Paul or Matt or Chris, but I think you'd be the best choice."
He sighed. "I don't know Nina, just give me some time to think about it."
A day after Becca and I had gone shopping and had redecorated her room, we were on set. A paparazzi had managed to sneak on the set, and Becca caught him and brought him to the security guards. While they were dragging the man away, he bit them. When he was released, he ran at Becca and hit her hard in the face.
She screamed out in shock and kicked him in the balls. The pap started swearing at her and calling her a whore and a bitch. I was about to stop him when Ian got in his face, his eyes murderous. "Never, ever call my daughter that again, do you hear me? If you do, you'll have to deal with a lot more than a 13 year old girl kicking you in the balls, got it?" He was livid, but his voice was deadly calm, which terrified me.
The pap nodded, shocked, and Ian released him back to security, who dragged him away.
Ian looked back to me. "If anyone ever tries to hurt her again, I will ruin them. I'll sign the form." Then he looked over at Becca, touched her cheek in a fatherly way, and stalked off to his dressing room.
I looked over at Becca, who was holding her cheek, her eyes watering. "Come on, Sweetie, let's get some ice on that. I told you Ian wasn't that bad."
She nodded, laughing a little. "I have to thank him after. And apologize…" She trailed off.
"Just give him some time to cool off, first. I've never seen him act that way before. I honestly believe he loves you already."
She giggled. "I've never had someone protect me like that before."
I could tell she wanted to change the subject, so I grinned. "Do you want to meet the rest of your new family? At least your onset family?"
She nodded and I pulled her to Paul's dressing room first, knowing he'd want to meet this precious girl first.
