A/N: This was a request from Randomcat100. It's an idea I've had for a while, and just got around to writing. This soliloquy falls in between 'Night of Anguish' and 'The Final Battle'. Basically, it's Enjolras right after he's just been told that theirs is the last barricade left (in the movie, first light on June 6th). He's realizing that his revolution is doomed and that all his friends are going to die. I picture him going into the cafe at the beginning, and coming back out at the end. It's sung to the tune of 'What Have I Done?/Javert's Suicide', and as you can tell, I drew from both. Be nice, I wrote this in like an hour :)
What have I done? Great Robespierre, what have I done?
Ma mére I have failed, unfit to be called her son
Have we lost so completely, have things gotten so bad
That nothing remains of the gunpowder we had?
My men lose their faith, as the night turns to day
We're all doomed to die, but I will not run away.
Damned if I'll yield to the National Guard!
Damned if I'll let them get to my friends!
The revolution has yet come so far
I'll give my life, if I must, for its ends
But I can't let them see me break down
It is either Patrie or the crown.
Yet why did I allow myself
To have a conscience in a war?
Although I hate to shoot another
I did what I must, I killed my brother.
I should have fought these men alone
Doomed only me
But I was blinded by the light
My vision of what France could be.
Oh the future I saw! What a thing to behold!
This is all I have fought for! Why I'll never grow old!
Must I admit Grantaire was right?
The man I've shunned for all these years?
Did he know something no one else did?
I should have paid heed, but it's too late now.
I don't know whether I should pray
If so, what for?
That we may live another day?
Or that the dawn will come once more?
I am reaching, but I fall
And the black blots out the red
As I face the awful truth
That my friends will soon be dead
But the future will be bright
Unlike past and present bleak
For the king is nothing now
Vive France, la république!
