Light feels as though is arm is being yanked out of its socket and rolls his eyes at Misa Amane's inane yipping. He's been tuning her out for the last hour and a half. Rolling his eyes again, he pulls his wrist out of her grip and keeps walking, ignoring her indignant yelps.
As he walks speedily down the street, Light glances at the store fronts he passes, hoping to see some dress shop or ice cream parlor that would keep his annoying girlfriend quiet for a few precious moments. Halting suddenly, he feels Misa's gargantuan breasts crush into his back and hears her surprised squawk.
"Light," she titters with confusion, "why did you stop?" Light ignores her, as the whole of his concentration is paying attention to a simple object sitting on a shelf in a store front display. A panda bear. A simple, unassuming, stuffed toy intended for children. It was large, large enough to replace a small human in a bed. Plenty large enough to wrap one's arms around in an uncharacteristic attempt at snuggling. Ignoring Misa yet again, Light ducked into the small shop.
It was the type of place that, normally, would make Light want to vomit. Everything was pink, red, heart-shaped, fluffy and furry, or a combination of the four. There were white bears holding bright hearts that exclaimed such cliche sentiments as "I love you," "be mine," and "forever yours." Ribbons hung from the ceiling as if the owner was under the impression that they were romantic. Chocolates in bow-tied boxes practically fell off the shelves in huge abundance. It was the type of store that Light would rather die than be seen in, but there he was. His feet immediately carry him to the window display that contains the infamous bear. Fingering the price tag and finding it an astronomical price that would normally have made him want to throw something, today he automatically takes his wallet out.
Light picks up the bear and stares it squarely in its plastic, emotionless eyes. To him, it is as if L looked back at him. The desire to own this toy, to have it sit on his bed, staring at him, is overwhelming. As if in a trance, his feet carry him to the counter with the bear in his hands.
The girl behind the counter giggles when she sees him. Her giggle becomes a snicker when Misa skips up behind him excitedly.
"Yay! Is that for me, Light?" Misa bubbled happily. Light rolls his eyes for the countless time that day, his mind racing for an excuse as to why he might buy this for someone other than his girlfriend.
"No, it's for my...sister's birthday. She adores panda bears," Light lies in explanation, and Misa's whole body seems to sag in disappointment. The clearly opinionated cashier clucks in disapproval of his obvious mistreatment of her. Once he has paid and his purchase has been bagged, he swiftly leaves the cluttered, nauseating shop behind, clutching the bagged bear tightly. His eyes dark around at other passers by, as if one of them would steal it given the chance.
Misa follows his loyally home, yippering like a chihuahua. He can almost hear the tears falling from her eyes when he tells her he has to work and slams his bedroom door in her face. He tries to care, but is generally unsuccessful at the endeavor.
Once alone, Light glares hotly at the innocent shopping bag, his eyes suspicious, as if it had some sort of malicious plan for him. As the bag was made of a thin, flimsy plastic material, it fell down around the bear and revealed it. It was facing Light, staring at him, daring him to ponder why the impulse to buy it had been so strong. Ignoring the intimidatingly truthful stare of the bear, Light changed into his pajamas and climbed into bed. Turning the bear onto it's side facing away from Light, he was able to pretend it was a certain black-haired, raccoon-eyed
