"Seriously?" Caroline muttered, staring down at the map balanced precariously on her lap. As if starting fresh in a new town wasn't bad enough, she'd gotten lost within the first few minutes. Where was the school? The hospital? All she could see around were trees. Literally. Huffing loudly she slammed her hands against the wheel, frustrated. How was she suppose to get a fresh start when she couldn't even figure out where her new home was? Taking a moment she took a deep breath, leaning back in her car seat. Maybe it hadn't been a good idea to leave. She remembered Elena's words, and how desperate she'd been to keep her friend at Whitmore.
"But where will you go? You can't just abandon me, abandon us." Elena practically wailed, causing Caroline to grit her teeth for a moment.
"And whose us? You're busy getting your medical degree, Bonnie and Damon are dead, Stefan is god knows where and no one but me has been trying to get back inside Mystic Fall's borders. I'm sorry, I need a break from everything, even if it's only for a few months."
Of course, she'd been lying. She couldn't go back, not even if Stefan reappeared and Bonnie got herself back from whatever void she was in. Before she'd left she'd made sure to visit her mother, giving her a new phone number to call, along with a select few others in case of some kind of emergency. Somehow that had also gotten Enzo her number, but she'd address that issue at a later date. Looking down at the map once more her nose wrinkled, not even understanding where she was suppose to be. Maybe somewhere off the side of the map? It certainly felt like it.
She'd become so engrossed in the map and her location that she hadn't heard the footsteps of the two men outside, causing her to jump when there was a light tap on the window. Blue eyes widened in shock, recognizing the tell-tale signs of a sheriff, namely the badge gleaming on his chest. Lingering behind him was a boy, looking roughly the same age as her. Or, well, what age she looked like.
"Am I in trouble?" she asked the moment she rolled her window down, teeth biting down on her lower lip. She hadn't seen any other cars around, and she certainly wasn't speeding. Pulled over by the sheriff on your first day, nice going she chided herself quietly. And yet she couldn't help but notice how the man looked uncomfortable, and her eyes flickered to the younger boy, noticing how he seemed to be gaping at her.
"Not at all Miss." the sheriff said quickly, gaining her attention once more. "We just don't have that many newcomers around town, and when Stiles here spotted your car he pointed out that you might of gotten a little lost."
Stiles? She glanced over at the boy, suppressing a smile as he tried to play it cool and give her a wave. His smile was full of awkwardness, and with a name like that she couldn't blame him. What kind of a name is Stiles?
"Yeah, uh, thanks." she directed her words at the two of them, a small laugh slipping from her lips. "I'm just moving into town now, and it looks like I've already gotten myself completely lost. You wouldn't happen to know where this place is, would you Sir?" she asked the Sheriff, pointing down to the area she'd circled. She'd chosen a house just on the outskirts of town, close to the forest so she could do some bunny hunting when times were tough.
"You've moved here on your own?" the teenager blurted out, and she looked up at him with a confused frown. "Sorry it's just, you look way too young."
"I'm eighteen, the legal age." she said quickly, her gaze darting between the Sheriff and Stiles, who both seemed to be staring at her. "I can find you some I.D if you want?"
"I'm sure you are, there's no need for that." the Sheriff said slowly, raising his hands a little as though he'd noticed her frantic tone. "Anyway, let me help you with-"
"So you're going to be in school, right?" Stiles asked, shocking Caroline and pushing past the Sheriff to lean into her car window, the eagerness clear on his face. "At Beacon Hills high school?"
"Yes?" she blinked at him, watching as Stile's smile grew. "But not for a few days. I need to enroll and unpack into my new place...when I find it." she looked to the Sheriff, who was sighing slightly.
"Stiles." he said in a warning tone, making the boy retreat slightly so that the older man could lean down. It didn't take long to realize she was merely a five minute drive away, leaving her a little pink in the face at the embarrassment of having been so close.
"Thank you." she said quickly, a hand moving to run through one of her curls as she gave the two a small smile.
"You're welcome. Well, we'll leave you to it. I'm sure you've got quite a lot on your plate and we wouldn't want to intrude." he replied, and she gave him another polite smile as he turned to leave.
"Hey dad, just give me a minute, ok?" She looked between the men, suddenly realizing why he seemed so relaxed around the Sheriff, who was frowning at his son.
"Fine, but just a minute."
It took the boy less than a second to be leaning against her car window again, his fingers strumming loudly against her car door. "So..." he trailed off, his eyes glued down on the map balanced on her legs. "Edge of the woods huh? That's got to be just a little freaky, especially living on your own. What's your name anyway?"
"I'm a big girl." she said with a wry smile, watching as the boys eyebrows raised. "It's Caroline. Caroline Forbes."
"Caroline Forbes." he repeated with a nod, wincing as he hit his head on her window frame.
"Stiles!" she could hear the Sheriff calling out for his son, resulting in an annoyed look on the teenagers face.
"Well Caroline Forbes, I'll see you around school I guess." he said, eyes flickering down to the map once more before giving her a goofy grin, leaning back out.
"See you then. And tell your dad thanks." she added with a soft laugh, moving to start the engine once more. If all the townsfolk were like those two, she'd most likely have it good in Beacon Hills, along with a little entertainment too.
