"Hey!" Arthur yelled toward the small boy running around in the field.
"You there, little boy, where are your parents?" he asked, walking up to the boy.
"I don't have any," the boy answered, kicking the grass. "I've been looking for somewhere to stay." the boy continued to walk through the grass that was about half as tall as he was.
"Say, boy, what's your name?" Arthur asked.
"The boy smiled, "My name's Alfred, what's your name?"
"Arthur, my name is Arthur," he smiled, crouching down to Alfred's eye level. "Alfred, would you like to stay with me at my house with me?"
The small boy's face lit up with happiness. "Yes! I would love to!" Giving Arthur a big hug, he continued, "oh, thank you so much!"
"It's my pleasure, Alfred," Arthur smiled, hugging the boy. Arthur stood up and offered a hand to Alfred.
"How does ice cream sound to you right now?" he asked, smiling as Alfred smiled a huge smile.
"Yes! Yes! Yes! Ice cream! Ice cream!" Alfred grabbed Arthur's hand and started running in the wrong direction.
"Alfred, you're going the wrong way," Arthur informed the boy.
"Oh," he stopped running, turned the opposite way and started running, pulling Arthur with him.
"Do you give up yet?" Alfred asked, walking toward the man kneeling on the muddy ground. "Face it, Arthur, you aren't gonna win, just let me be my own country!" he screamed as the rain poured around them.
"I...I can't," Arthur responded, tears falling. "You're still too young, you are not ready."
"Arthur, maybe it's you who isn't ready. I'm not your little brother anymore. I'm not little. I've grown up. Now, maybe it's time for you to grow up and realize that I need my own life!"
"I...I'm sorry," Arthur cried.
"'Sorry''s not gonna cut it, old man," Alfred started angrily.
"Do you know what you've put me through all these years? Do you know how it feels to be ordered around by someone when you know as a fact that you are strong enough to be on your own?"
"I'm sorry," Arthur cried more.
"Arthur, I'm older now, and I don't think it's fair at all that you still want to control me. I'm strong enough to be my own country, so deal with it and let me go!" Alfred yelled as tears started falling down his cheeks.
"Arthur, please, let's just stop fighting and go back home," Arthur nodded.
"Just promise me one thing," Arthur looked up at Alfred, his eyes red and teary. "I'll be there for you, if you'll be there for me," Arthur nodded and Alfred smiled, holding out a hand for Arthur.
"Come on, let's go." Arthur took Alfred's hand and they walked away from the battlefield of wet mud and pouring rain.
