Shatter proof
Rain poured down off the window panes as I pulled coffee shots. I hated my job but hey who cares at least it pays. Common grounds was busy today. In fact it was so busy Oliver decided we all needed to work double shifts which was just great. Oliver could be nice though, well... when he wanted to be.
Let me start from the beginning, my name is Holly West and for the past 3 years I have been pulling coffee shots at common grounds to support my nieces and nephews. All 5 of them. I did have family but hey this is Morganville. I used to live in a six bedroom apartment with my sister Jade but she died, well she was murdered outside the day house 3 years ago and i was left to pick up the pieces. They never found who killed her or if they did they we're never punished.
My grandma Katherine moved here a hundred years ago and married in to the Day family. However, she died when my mother was born and my mother Kate was bought up by the authorities. She became a carless drunk and i was left to raise my younger sister Jade. When Jade died i was left to care for her children so here i am, slaving away at a coffee bar for the most of my life. And it sucks.
Closing time couldent come around quick enough. I was just pulling down the shutters when I noticed a figure sat in the corner watching me. I knew from experience that this was bad and Oliver had left just minutes ago. I turned to run towards the door when a gentle voice called out from the darkness. 'Please don't run' it said 'I am sorry to frighten you.' I hesitated by the door and flicked on the lights. Almost instantly the whole shop was bathed in a golden glow and i saw at once who the stranger was.
It was a young man, barley out of his teens with red hair and deep blue eyes. He looked like your average collage kid complete with leather jacket and boots. He was beautiful but there was a tell tale shadow to his face that confirmed my worst fear. He was a vampire and he was hungry.
'Look 'he said 'my names Sam, what's yours.' He had a soft honey voice that was soothing and reassuring at the same time and against my better judgement I replied. 'Holly' I said. 'I work for Oliver and if you touch me he will get you.' Perfectly aware that I was unprotected and as nice as Oliver could be he wouldn't raise a finger to protect me otherwise.
'Why on earth would I do that?' He said. 'You just seemed nice and I was just going to make sure you didn't get hurt. There are a lot of bad things out in the dark you know.' He seemed genuine enough.
'Yeah' the picture of my sister's empty body filled my mind. 'I know.' And I left. Leaving him sat on the table behind me. No one no matter how sweet was going to get to me. My heart was strong, shatter proof and anyway He was a vampire, they could all go to hell. I couldn't help looking back.
