You're Free When You Fly
The woman walks upon the darkened rooftop, her blonde bangs fall in front of her eyes. Her black hoodie is pulled tight around her small frame to keep out the bitter evening air. She glances back at the stairs ascending to her special place. A place where no one could bother her. The bright golden light from the stairwell illuminates a small area of the rooftop and then falls into the dark blackness of the night. Her high-heeled shoes make a soft tapping noise on the concrete. She notices the sound and looks down at her feet. She had never liked these shoes and she didn't know why she even wore them. Then she remembered. She was playing a model for the team in their most current job. She smiles softly as she thinks of the team. They were the family she never had as an orphan child. In fact, they were like her secret family, a family that only she knew of and longed for so badly. A small tear creeps down her pale cheek. She quickly brushes it away and continues walking towards the edge of the roof.
The woman hears him call her name in her ear. She whips around, a mass of blonde hair smacking her face as she does so. No one is there. Her sapphire eyes scan the roof in the way that a scanner reads a fingerprint. She sighs and pulls at her ear, letting the team's communication device fall out of it. It makes no noise as it hits the concrete. She turns back to the side of the building and looks down at the city below. Cars cruise by and people walk quickly to get back to their warm homes. She grins and lets the jacket slide off of her shoulders revealing a black harness on top of a lavender tank. She slips off the high-heels and replaces them with a pair of black Converse's. She bends to the ground and feels blindly for a rope on the cold roof. The sensation makes her hand draw back as the sharp cold rushes through her entire body. She grabs the cable and attaches it to herself. She pulls on it tight, making sure it is secure before backing away from the edge of the roof. She breathes in deeply and breaks into a run.
Her feet leave the ground as she runs over the ledge and dives into the air. The wind tickles her face as she slowly descends passed the building's many glass windows. Her reflection stares back at her in the mirrored glass. She is free from all of the world's worries and nothing can bother the woman. A rush of adrenaline flows through her body as the cable pulls tight against her chest and she slows to a halt at her office window. A lopsided grin appears on her face and her eyes widen with delight. She slides open the window and slips inside the dimly lit space. On one wall is a dingy couch and in front of it is large cherry desk. She sits in her immense leather chair and pulls the bottom drawer on the desk open. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, POP! The drawer slides as far as it could and reveals the young woman's favorite treasure: a tattered, gray bunny rabbit stuffed animal. One of its eyes was missing, an ear was hanging by a thread, and the fur, which had once been a vivid white, had now turned a dingy gray. She hugs the bunny close to her and crawls up onto the green sofa. Her eyes begin to droop and she cannot keep them open any longer. She falls asleep, dreaming about her secret family, her favorite bunny rabbit, and the freedom that sky-scraper diving could give her in only a matter of seconds.
