A/N: I'm going to make myself cry by writing this, but I need to. Quite a lot of people see Mordred as evil and believe that he smiled before he died because he believed he would not die. I don't believe that so I decided to write a fanfiction about my belief behind his smile.

I've completely pushed the last three episodes out of my mind and to me, they never happened. But I'm still going to write this.

Disclaimer: As much as I wish I did, I don't own Merlin.

Sorry for my awful writing and please forgive me if I make spelling and grammer mistakes. Feel free to critique/criticise anything; I really don't mind.

The sword ploughed through Mordred's chest, the cool edge of the blade touching the rim of his heart. Even though it was icy, a comforting warmth filled his body. He stared into Arthur's blue eyes, hoping that the King could forgive him for his vital mistake. Mordred had never wanted to hurt him, but he had been left with no other choice. Before he met his end, he had at least wanted to make someone happy or proud and seek revenge on Kara's murder. Stabbing Arthur had been the only way to escape the burden thrown onto his shoulders by Morgana and to rid himself of the heart-aching grief that he could not outrun.

Mordred wanted to thank Arthur for everything. He wanted to thank him for saving his life as a young boy, then making him a knight and giving him honour. Arthur had been proud of him and given his life more of a meaning. But that had ended when his love had been taken from him by that same man. He realised now that Kara's appearance had been for one reason: to corrupt him and turn him against Arthur. Yet still, after everything, he continued to keep her in his heart.

When Kara had been executed, he had been lost. His felt like his head would explode and like his heart had been shattered into thousands of tiny shards. It was like all the happiness had been drained from him along with his life. And that was why he had gone to Morgana. Throughout his whole life, he had been loyal to three people. Three people who had helped him and looked out for him. The first of those people was hanged for her crimes by the second. Therefore, he only had one other he could turn to and that was the high priestess Morgana.

When greatly overwhelmed, he told Morgana of Emrys' true identity and betrayed his friend. Merlin had been nothing but loyal to him before Kara's death, yet he still gave up his secret. It was the only thing that could have gained her trust once more, as he did once stab her, and it had worked. For the first week, he enjoyed staying with her again, seeing the person he had met as a young boy, blessing him with her pride and love. But then the other person broke through, the one she had become. Her actions scared him, and he regretted his decision. But he could not turn back. It was too late.

And now Arthur had freed him. He was now free of the curse of working beside Morgana and he was free from the hell his life had become. Finally, he was free of his destiny and the burden placed upon his shoulder. He could die happy and at peace. The only thing he truly regretted was stabbing Arthur, but with Merlin's help, everything could be fine.

Mordred smiled, not knowing how to portray his thankfulness in words. And then he collapsed, the life fading from his eyes.

Yup, crying. I hope you liked it and understand why I think Mordred smiled when dying.
I never for a second believed Mordred was evil and I never will. Never.
