Once I rose above the noise and confusion…

Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion…

I was soaring ever higher…

But I flew too high…

I used to be the captain of an amazing space cruiser. I was at the pinnacle of my game out there in space. I rose above all else, just so I could get a glimpse of what was truly real; of what was truly valued.

I clearly flew to high.

Now she's gone, and I've nowhere else to go. Now, even though I can see, I'm blind. Blinded by anger; by sadness, by emotions that my friends will never understand. They could never relate though they say they can.

This is quite the predicament. All these emotions have driven me mad, though I still think straight. I can hear them talking to me, sometimes. They tell me encouraging things, about things only I would know, simply because they are me.

I befriended these voices, but now they call me to a new destiny. To move on; to venture the world, and go where I please.

Now I am out in the wilderness, passing through towns and leaving as quickly as possible. I wear a cloak now, masquerading as a man who has a purpose; a reason. This charade is starting to govern my life, but I no longer care.

I can feel my emotions slipping away, as if I'm slowly recovering. Or deteriorating; it's no longer mine to choose.

I'm very intelligent, but I'm no wise man. I've learned many things, but I know nothing.

Right now, my life is like a ship, being tossed about in rough waters.

I try to set a course for better places, but the voices tell me no.

It is clear that I'm taking the right direction when they encourage me. They tell me many good things. They say that, though I will remember these past events, where I'm going will help me recover.

The voices have never led me astray, so I continue onward.

I pass through a town today, if only to buy the necessary food and drink I need to live off of. I hear a sound and twitch my head around, but nothing is there.

I assume it is nothing and continue.

"What do you think of that?" I say aloud, even though it is unnecessary. The voices can read my thoughts.

I think that someone is following you, voice one told me. I never actually named my voices, so I numbered them instead.

It is nothing pertaining to your quest, voice two told me.

Then came my favorite voice, and the only one I named. Go one, Tails. We believe in you!

I sighed and smiled lightly. "Thanks for the encouragement… Cosmo."

She was always the one that encouraged me the most; just like before.

The voices directed me towards a town. Unusual, seeing as they normally wanted me to avoid towns whenever possible.

The noise again. I turn around, only to find nothing, once again. Still, I followed the advice of the voices, thinking they were nothing pertinent to the mission, whatever it was.

I walked through the town, meandering through the Mobian crowd when I finally realized what the voices wanted me to see.

I was in Mobotropolis, of course, but what I over looked was even more important.

It was a statue in Cosmo's honor, for her brave actions. A tear fell from my eye, but I didn't feel the weight of sorrow.

It was joy that I felt. Someone put their hand on my shoulder. I turned around to find a blue hedgehog; my older brother.

He smiled at me. I smiled at him. Now I see why the voices wanted me to come here. They knew all along.

In my head, they chanted…

Carry on my wayward son…

There'll be peace when you are done…

Lay your weary head to rest…

Don't you cry no more…
