This came out of one of the bazillionty shipping/writing prompt memes on Tumblr: character + line = drabble. I got Taichi and "I've seen the way you look at me when you think I don't notice." I also got an avalanche of plotbunnies, and this is what came out of it. I'm a Chihayafuru newbie (I've watched ten episodes so far) but I'm also complete and utter Chihayafuru trash. A show that makes me as happy as Ore Monogatari, with as many cinnamon rolls as Fruits Basket!? Bless this series for existing (and bless portraitofagirl for introducing me to it).
Hope my bite-sized fic is enjoyable.
"I've seen the way you look at me when you think I don't notice."
Chihaya cocked her head at Taichi, pocky dangling from her mouth. When he didn't elaborate, she waved the box in his face as she finished the stick. "Want some?"
He took her wrist and pulled her arm down, huffing. "Did you hear what I said?"
"Heeeyy…!" She pouted, trying to wriggle free. "I asked if– you wanted pocky!"
Rolling his eyes, he grabbed two sticks from the box and popped them into his mouth. "Happy now?"
She stuck her tongue out at him. "Don't talk with your mouth full." She grabbed a handful of pocky, crunched down on all of them, then said, "And I don't know what you're talking about."
"Hypocrite." But he was smiling.
Undaunted, Chihaya continued. "Like the other day, at the beach, when I stared at you nearly all the time?" She grinned. "You'd have to be an idiot if you didn't notice that. I wasn't trying to hide it. I think you're hot and I don't care who knows!"
"…Oh." He blinked, cheeks reddening as she latched onto his arm with a giggle.
"Honestly, I've looked at you so many times and you hit me with that line?"
"Well, this isn't going how I planned at all."
"How did you plan it, Ta-i-chi?" she sang into his ear. He sputtered and shoved her away, glaring at her as she laughed.
"You were supposed to be in denial, and I'd bring up all the times I saw you do it, and then I'd kiss you," he said in a rush. "Or something."
"Silly Taichi," she exclaimed, throwing her arms around him again. "We aren't in a shoujo manga."
He sighed and leaned his head against hers. "You're silly," he said, happily. "I know that."
"But you can kiss me anyway. I've been waiting for a while."
She didn't have to tell him twice.
