If only.
Two little words that could change the world. If only I had worn a different pair of shoes. If only I had answered this question differently. If only I hadn't made this mistake.
If only I had told you I loved you when I had the chance.
Maybe it was the naivety, maybe it was the pressure and the uncertainty. Maybe I was just too scared. The way you looked at me, the way your eyes glittered in the candlelight. The way you were stubborn to the point of being irrational. The way you overcame every obstacle hurled at you.
The way you smiled.
Your smile was contagious. At times it was a miracle that frequented your features rarely, but as I grew to know you, I learned how to coax that brilliant, contagious grin when you were in any mood. It lit up your face so radiantly that I seemed to be looking at an angel. My angel.
If only, at those times when you were devastated and thought yourself alone in the world, if only I had held you comfortingly, soothing away the worries and the fears.
If only, when you were happy, I had celebrated with you instead of being reserved, maybe then I would know what it feels like to be wrapped in your arms, a warm hug of joy and excitement.
If only, when our eyes had met, and yours wordlessly questioned mine, if only I had responded with the truth instead of affecting a shallow look of lost confusion, maybe then I would know what lay behind those dazzling eyes, the windows to your soul.
But if only can't bring you back.
If only can't erase the past, no matter how much I wish it. If only can't bridge time and space and place you by my side. If only won't let us rethink our choices.
If only is just two words, two simple words. Two words that comfort me while causing me the utmost agony, forcing me to imagine what could have been.
If only.
